Attachment No. 6Attachment No. 6Greetings to our Pomona Commissioners Attachment No. 6
Attachment No. 6
Thank you for your continued focus on positive community health in our City.
I am Joseph McLellan, Supervisor of Youth Prevention at Prototypes / HealthRIGHT360.
My intent today is to highlight the risks involved with alcohol use in Pomona and Service Provider Area 3 (LA County).
This is in response to the consideration of Agenda Item H.1., and based on Community Needs Assessment Survey data from 2022 (LA County Public Health Dept.) Regarding current alcohol availability and perceived ease of access on the street in their neighborhood – ½ of 12-17 yr. olds note ease of access
72% of 18-25 yr. olds note ease of access
Only 53% of those same respondents believe youth risk harming themselves if they use alcohol regularly (once or twice per week).
50% of respondents 18-25 yr. old have used alcohol in the past 30 days.
Mean age of initiating alcohol use for 12-17 yr. olds is 12, & mean age for 18+ is 17. 12-17 yr. old respondents average almost 4 days binging alcohol in the past 30 days; with 18-25 yr. old respondents averaging almost 6 days binging in the past 30 days.
The mean age of initiating alcohol binging in our neighborhood is 19 years old. (NOT LEGAL AGE).
More alcohol in Pomona equals increased health risks for our priceless adolescents.
There is an existing alcohol retailer at 1694 Reservoir St., 0.6 miles from the proposed permit applicant.
I have been affected by alcohol related death here in Pomona, as recent as 2023. Public Comment #2
Good Evening Pomona Commissioners,
My name is Joline Yueh I am a prevention specialist at Prototypes.
I wanted to provide public comment in response to the consideration of Agenda Item H.1.
I work with both parents and students within the community of Pomona, the main repeated concerns I hear about a lot are themed around exposure and easy access to alcohol within the community. Parents not only feel that there is already an abundance of businesses that sell liquor but also that some are easily accessible to school sites and youth.
It is important that we are able to advocate the messaging that is brought forth by our community and be able to address concerns directly and take action in preventing more harmful factors for the beautifully passionate youth in Pomona.
Thank you for your consideration,
Joline Yueh
