Subject: Hueneme Road Improvements - Public Comment
Aachments: VCBoard.docx

Aached is a wrien Public Comment I presented to the Board of Supervisors. Rather than read aloud, I would like this to be included with any wrien public comments for our meeng tonight. I think it is important to share with my comments to my colleagues. If not, I can hand out copies.

Respecully,
Steven Gama
City Council Member / 2021 Mayor
Cell
Good morning Chair Parvin and fellow board
members and staff. My name is Steven Gama and I
am a City Council Person from the City of Port
Hueneme. Today, I am speaking as a resident and
my comments should not be seen as speaking on
behalf of the City of Port Hueneme nor the City
Council.

About a year ago, I came before you and spoke
about the poor condition of Hueneme Road. I
complained about the numerous pot holes and the
fact that it was a safety concern for many Port truck
drivers and the farm laborer community.

Today, I am here to thank you and the County Public
Works team as they have delivered on the promise
communicated to me when I stood here to
complain. Just yesterday, I drove my mother to a
medical appointment and she noticed the
improvement. I can tell you that it is now a pleasant
drive which is smooth and improved.

The improvements are the first I have seen on
County roads. They serve as a model for what
heavily traveled roads should look and feel like.

There are rumble strips on the center divider, which
alerts a driver if they are swaying off course. There
are expanded bike lanes which are also segregated
by a ruble strip. Additional shoulder space was
added at critical points allowing for trucks and cars
to pull over safely. The bike lane also has buffer
space making it safer.

Every 3 months the LAKAYS Cycling club from
Lancaster come to Hueneme Beach to ride to
Malibu and back. There are about 100 plus
participants and this past weekend, when they
drove into our parking lots at Hueneme Beach, they
were so excited as they saw the newly stripped bike
lanes driving in. They wanted me to relay a
message of thanks to you and especially your public
works staff. The improvements are impossible to
not notice and our community of truck drivers,
cyclists, students, farm workers feel blessed every
day when traveling the improved Hueneme Road.

On behalf of all, we say THANK YOU!
I am leaving a small unreportable gift for you all. I
want to make you aware of a weekly Saturday event
called Hueneme Beach Clean Up. We started our 9th
year at the beginning of August. Thus far we have
568 participants. We like say “every LITTER bit
counts” and I admit stealing that phrase from your
water agency. Supervisor Lopez and Supervisor
Long have participated and I want to extend an
invitation to all to come participate in wellness at
Hueneme Beach. We meet every Saturday at the
Alaska 261 Memorial, early start is 7:30 am with our
official start time 8:30 am, regardless of the start
time we stop at 10 am. We supply buckets, pick
sticks and a hand washing station! It’s impossible to
not feel good after strolling our beautiful beach
while doing a litter bit of good.

Subject: City Council Public Comment Agenda Item 12
City Council,
Please approve Agenda Item 12. I can’t recall the last me, if ever, that a council member’s future agenda item request was voted down. There have been several items in recent memory that made it onto meeng agendas that didn’t really need to be there. Looking at the included list of pending items requested, it appears some of those could be addressed without needing full Council aenon in a public meeng.

It seems to me that the proposed process would increase efficiency both in terms of ulizing staff resources and public involvement, which is a good thing. Shorter, efficient meengs are nice also. Thank you.

Dear Mayor, Mayor pro tem, council, and staff,
My name is Joan Tharp, a resident of Port Hueneme and a volunteer with Surfrider Ventura County.

As many of you know, last week’s rain caused the Ormond Lagoon to breach the sand berm, sending tons—literally—of trash onto Hueneme and Ormond beaches.

A huge thank-you to the City of Port Hueneme's Solid Waste Department for jumping into action and beginning the cleanup. Local residents also pitched in, including one who contacted the Oxnard City Manager to alert them about the trash washing up on our beach.

In response, Oxnard sent contractors to help with cleanup over the weekend. Surfrider volunteers and Hueneme residents joined the effort.

Over Thursday and Friday, Hueneme’s solid waste team filled six dumpsters with trash. On Saturday and Sunday, Surfrider, Oxnard contractors, and Hueneme staff collected another 4.5 dumpsters. Hueneme employees continued cleanup today.

While the trash wasn’t weighed, we estimate that the 10–11 dumpsters collected equal about 5,000 pounds.

Major thanks to the Hueneme city workers for helping keep our beaches and ocean clean. Surfrider will continue working with the City of Oxnard to find long-term solutions to reduce the trash that ends up in the lagoon— and ultimately, on our beaches and in the ocean.
