• Sign up for SMC Alert.
• Know your evacuation procedures.
• Visit myzone.zonehaven.com to find out what
zone you live in. SMC Alert evacuation notices will
use these zones when specifying evacuation
instructions.
• Create a Go-Bag so you can leave in a hurry.

Include medications, pet supplies, and all your
essentials.
• Plan where your family will meet in case of an
emergency.
• Practice all the ways out of your neighborhood.

Try driving these routes during the day and night.
• Know where your evacuation station is located.
• When evacuation seems likely, move flammables
away from your home.
• Evacuate early. Most deaths in wildfires occur
when people wait to evacuate.
• Follow evacuation orders, especially regarding
routes and destinations.
• • •
• Learn who your neighbors are. Dot ey have
special needs? Where are their gas and water
valves? Do they need help evacuating?
• Hold a neighborhood meeting to discuss ways to
be fire safe. Share information about home
hardening techniques and how to create a
defensible space around your home.
• Learn how your neighborhood can become a
Firewise community. Firewise communities often
receive insurance discounts.
• Make sure all your neighbors have filled out the
on line WPV-Ready emergency preparedness and
response annual community questionaire. This
information will help fire fighters keep your
neighbors safe. http://WPV-Ready.org/Myinfo
• Encourage everyone in your neighborhood to
have a free WFPD fire assessment performed. This
assessment will let your neighbors know what they
can do to make both their home and their
neighborhood safer from wildfire.

Harden your home against wildfire
• Re-roof with fire reistant materials.
• Block spaces between roof decking and covering
to prevent ember intrusion.
• Remove vegetative debris from the roof.
• Eaves should be boxed in (soffited-eave design)
and protected with ignition-resistant materials.
• Install dual-paned windows.
• Limit the size and number of windows that face
large areas of vegetation.
• Update your home siding with ignition resistant
building materials, such as stucco, fiber cement
siding, treated wood, or other approved materials.

This is especially important when neighboring
homes are within 30 ft of the home.
ithin 1 Oft of structures should be built
n-resistant materials.
• Add a battery back-up to the garage door motor
so that the garage can open if power is out.
• Install weather stripping around and under the
garage door to prevent embers from blowing in.
• Treat windows and vents in the garage the same
way as if they were a part of the house.
• Cover your chimney and stovepipe outlets with
ember resistant screens.
• Close the fireplace flue during fire season when
the chimney is not being used.
• Separate your fence from your house or upgrade
to a noncombustible material to reduce the chance
of the fence bringing fire to your home.

About Portola Valley
Thank you for exhibiting at our Wildfire Preparedness Fair. This is a brief summary of how Portola Valley town and fire regulations differ from California standards. We think only a small percentage of the 1,800 homes in town have mitigated for wildfire.

Home Hardening
• In May-2009, the Town extended the Chapter 7A WUI Building Standards to new buildings and significant retrofits across all of the town of Portola Valley, not just VHFHSZ areas.
o Does not apply to unincorporated San Mateo County areas known as Ladera, Los Trancos, and Vista Verde neighborhoods, who will likely attend the Fair. • As of Jan-2022, the Town's Home Hardening Ordinance exceeds Chap 7A with:
o Prohibition of wood shake and shingle roofs, even if treated. Must be Class A. o Prohibition of wood and shingle siding. Siding must be noncombustible. o Requirement for ember-resistant vents in attic and foundation, not wire mesh o Noncombustible material for the walking surface of decks. ■ Wood composites such as Trex and TimberTech are not allowed.

Walking surface must be metal, tile, concrete, brick, etc. o Noncombustible fences and gates within 10 feet of the home o Roof eaves must be enclosed (except gable end overhangs and high roofs) Vegetation Management
• Weed abatement must be completed by July 1st
• A permit is required for removal of significant trees, see town webpage o Diameters of oak > 11 .5", redwood and fir > 17 .2", bay laurel > 11 .5", maple and madrone > 7.6"
• WFPD home assessment recommends
o Remove trees within 0-5 feet from structure or prune limbs 10-15 feet from roof/structure
o Clear driveways of overhanging trees 14 feet up
o Clear driveways 5 feet on each side of driveway
• In May-2021 , the Town banned new plantings of the Flammable Five o Juniper, Cypress, Acacia, Pine, and Eucalyptus
o All Five are non-native species that contain resin and are highly flammable. 32 WILDFIRE PREPAREDNESS FAIR 2022

Subject: Sam Trans Buses to be cut in Portola Valley in August 2022, help? Date: Friday, May 27, 2022 8:34:08 AM
Portola Valley Town Council,
The Portola Valley Sam Trans bus system is being cut in August 2022.

Senator Josh Becker is on the transportation committee and Assemblymember Marc Berman is on the transportation committee.

The only PV bus to remain is ONE bus taking children home from Woodside school to Portola Valley. The other buses will be discontinued. We fought to retain our bus system last year and we should fight again by writing letters.

How can our PV Town Council help in this process?
We are the smallest town in San Mateo county and our ridership will never match that of other towns in San Mateo County. We pay our taxes for our bus service and in 2018 we continue pay 1/2 cent tax on every $1.00 for these services. Measure W was passed in 2018 and brings in $80,000 million a year.

We care about the new residents coming into our community and our minimal bus system should remain stable and consistent. Children should get a ride to the library and to town center to wait for a parent from all schools including Corte Madera and Ormondale.

Bus services should remain for all who need it not just a certain age category, high school students only! We have elderly and those in need as well. Once the bus system is cut, Portola Valley will have a hard time getting the Sam Trans buses back.

Our citizen transportation services are being cut. How can our Portola Valley Town Council assist by writing a letter to Senator Josh Becker and Assemblymember Marc Berman?
Thank you for your consideration.

All the best,
Kristi Corley
