Outlook
Letter of Support for Alpine Ford Field Bathroom/Snack Shack Improvement From Sangini Bedner
Date Sat 10/18/2025 3:39 PM
To z-PV Town Clerk (Shared) <[email protected]> Cc Sangini Bedner ; Ilja Bedner
You don't often get email from . Learn why this is important Dear Town of Portola Valley,
I’m a grateful resident and passionate baseball mom…specifically a passionate Alpine Little League baseball mom:-). As the records will show I am proud to speak on behalf of Ford Field and all the magic it shares with our community and beyond. My family is on the heels of making history, with the Alpine 12U All-Stars team finishing an epic run. This run further opened our eyes as to why Ford Field is in a league of its own (pun intended). We played on countless fields in countless other locations, and THERE IS NO PLACE LIKE FORD.

With this sentiment in mind, I’m strongly encouraging and supporting the proposal to upgrade the bathrooms and Snack Shack provisions. Both of these areas are critical components for players and families to experience Ford to its best. The existing porter potties are in a word:

DISGUSTING. At the risk of too much information, I will tell you that I would rather go to the woods and pee in front of hikers passing by on the trail rather than enter the porter potty.

And I know that I”m not alone. Having sanitary quarters for people to use the bathroom will not only benefit the Leagues’ families, but it will also allow for Alpine to share its magic with other leagues—with these updates we are perfect candidates for hosting tournaments for D52 and beyond. A clean and safe bathroom environment and a properly structured and staffed Snack Shack are the current missing elements for Alpine to fully thrive.

Thank you for taking the time to hear me out and thank you for being part of a Town that supports the historic and treasured Ford Field.

Best,
Sangini M. Bedner

I am in full support of installing flush toilets and a new Snack Concessions building at Ford Field. We need improved sanitary conditions and a new building will also provide improved views from Alpine Road. The Snack Shack is in desperate need of upgrades. Ford Park is not only used by the little league families, but all community members who hike and walk the trails, as well as those who may choose to picnic there.

The town needs this field, it has been such an amazing place since I was a child and my brother played in the Alpine League.

Good morning,
My name is Delle Maxwell, and I’m now a member of the Open Space CommiJee.

I would like to provide a comment for Town Council meeMng on October 22, regarding Agenda item 9(a), the Council Study Session regarding a Parks & RecreaMon CommiJee proposal to replace both the snack shack and the portable toilets with ADA compliant sewer connected restrooms and a more sizable concession area.

I have done a bit of research on the costs of building a new restroom. A few days ago I asked Stephanie Linder, the CEO of the Gardens of Golden Gate Park, about the approximate cost of the recently rebuilt restroom at the San Francisco Botanical Garden. She said it was around $900,000. It is accessible, has both men’s and women’s entrances, and is a very nice design. It connected to exisMng water and sewer lines. The high price may be partly aJributed to the cost of construcMon and regulatory complexity in the city.

This led me to do a liJle more research on public restrooms, and I came across the Portland Loo, which is a unit that can be purchased and customized as needed. It can be hooked up to sewer and water or be used without it. The design is simple and elegant. It turns out that the unit can cost around $185,000 and installaMon costs to exisMng plumbing would be about $30,000, according to their web site. If sewer and water hookups need to be installed, the cost will of course be higher.

These units are now being used in many places around the country.

I’m providing a few links here for your reference:
hJps://portlandloo.com/the-loo/
hJps://portlandloo.com/gallery/
hJps://portlandloo.com/faq/
RealisMcally, it turns out that installaMon costs can go up in ciMes with a lot of regulaMons. The installaMon costs in this project in NYC far exceeded the base unit cost of $185,000:
hJps://portlandloo.com/nyc-chooses-the-portland-loo/
However, I think we could avoid a lot of this extra cost as this would be a simpler project. Consequently, I’d like to offer this possible soluMon for the Council’s consideraMon.

Respecfully,
Delle Maxwell

11. Dear Members of the Portola Valley Town Council,
As President of Alpine Little League and a parent of three players, I want to express my strong support for the proposed Snack Shack and Bathroom Project at Ford Field.

The Snack Shack is the heart of the Ford Field experience. It’s not simply a place to buy food, it’s where families gather before and after games, where players from both teams share a meal, and where friendships form between parents and neighbors. The shared post-game time around the Shack is a defining part of Alpine’s community culture, and one of the reasons so many families return year after year.

From a practical standpoint, the Snack Shack also provides tremendous value to working families. Weeknight games often coincide with dinner time, and the convenience of a reliable, affordable meal at the field makes it easier for parents to support their children and stay engaged in the community.

This sense of connection and continuity is hard to replicate anywhere else.

At the same time, the facility itself is long overdue for upgrades. The current structure is outdated and in need of modern plumbing, electrical improvements, and better food preparation areas. Similarly, permanent bathrooms at Ford Field are a critical need both for families attending games and for the hundreds of children who use the field throughout the season. The lack of proper facilities has been one of the most common concerns we hear from parents and volunteers.

Together, a new Snack Shack and bathroom facility would enhance the experience for families, make the space more functional, and preserve the strong sense of community that defines Ford Field. These improvements would serve the broader Portola Valley community for years to come.

Thank you for your time and for your continued support of local youth sports and recreation.

Warm regards,
Dan McDonough

Having raised two boys that played baseball at Ford field, I am in full support of the proposal to build flush toilets and rebuilding the snack shack. Even with my boys grown I still walk Alpine Rd. and enjoy watching the games on the field and would prefer a proper toilet if needed. Additionally I will be willing to contribute to the project with a donation in the future if passed.

Thank you for your service and hopeful support of this project! Optional: You can upload a copy of your comments.

Dear Town Council,
Dear Tpwn Council,
As a 40+ year resident of this area, I support installing flush toilets and a new Snack Shack building at Ford Field. These facilitaies have not been ungraded since I was a kid, and are sorely in need of improvement. Ford Park, as it was originally gifted and inteded is a shared community asset, and is used by the little league families and community members who hike and walk the trails, as well as those who may choose to picnic there. If the Council shows its support, I will pledge a small monetary donation to make this a reality for Portola Valley and the community it serves.

Thank you for your service and support of Ford Field and our town and its environs.

11. As a longstanding parent and board member of Alpine Little League, I am writing to urge the City Council to pursue planning for a permanent restroom and snack shack structure at Ford Field. Ford Field is a gathering place for the entire extended Little League community. Current and alumni families love attending games at the Field, enjoying a snack or meal and watching baseball. The League also hosts Little League Tournaments inviting leagues from all over the Bay Area and even Northern California to Ford. A key part of this is families being able to buy a drink, a snack, a hot dog or even teams/families sharing post-game meals at the field and building life long friendships. Before they have to run home to use a clean restroom... We simply do not have adequate restrooms or food facilities at the field.

We are the only League in our District that does not have permanent restrooms at our main field - relying on portable restrooms only. The League currently pays for one portable restroom at the field - that we have to keep padlocked to avoid overuse by the general public. The 1-2 portable restrooms that the Town provides are used 24/7 by local walkers, cyclists, motorists, delivery drivers and those who work throughout Town. There is huge demand for permanent restrooms in this location.

The League has tried several times to work cooperatively with the Town to try to come up with a practical solution that answers the very real need for upgraded facilities but also respects the restrictions in place at Ford Field. We tried to purchase a restroom trailer to permanently place at the field, install solar panels and have it serviced. We were told we could not proceed because of the scenic corridor and set-back requirements at the field. This was despite the fact that what we were proposing was much more attractive and sanity that what is currently at the field.

Alpine LL is willing to contribute significant funds to this project. As are many Alpine LL families. The league would be willing to partner with the Town to further fundraise for this project as well.

This can and should be done - it is long overdue. Having a single structure that houses both snack shack facilities and restrooms would truly be a gamechanger for the Town and for all the families who use the field and the area trails.

Dear PV Town Council,
As a Member of the Alpine Little League Community, I would love to see a permanent snack shack and restroom facility at Ford Field. Ford Field is a longtime community gathering spot beyond just little league for many to utilize. Additionally, other similar facilities we use in neighboring towns have permanent restrooms (Burgess Park, Palo Alto's Middlefield Park, etc). A permanent structure will be far more hygienic and aesthetically pleasing than the portable facilities that are there now, and the town has been awarded significant grant money, and has a financial partner in Alpine Little League, to get started on this project. It would be a huge win for both the league and town.

Thank you for your consideration!

11. Dear Town Council,
I wanted to write in and share my complete support for the proposed flush toilets and a new concessions building at Ford Field.

These improvements are essential and benefit not only the little league but also the broader community:

First, current temporary bathrooms are unsanitary given the number of visitors year round, and improvements benefit all park users.

Second, the current Snack Shack is an eyesore from Alpine Road. A new building will not only provide a more modern facility enabling better food services but also provides the opportunity for enhanced aesthetics from Alpine Road.

Ford Park serves our entire community, not only Little League families but also hikers, runners, and cyclists. By acting now to support this project, the Council will be improving an essential community resource.

To support this essential upgrade for the community, I am prepared to pledge a significant amount of money when the Council approves this project.

Thank you for your consideration.

11. Dear Town Council,
I am writing to express my full support for the proposed installation of flush toilets and a new Snack Concessions building at Ford Field.

These upgrades are essential for two key reasons:

Public Health and Sanitation: Improved sanitary conditions are a necessity for all park users.

Community Experience: The current Snack Shack is desperately outdated. A new building will provide a much-needed modern amenity and enhance the aesthetic views from Alpine Road.

Ford Park serves our entire community, not only Little League families but also hikers, walkers, and picnickers. By acting now to support this project, the Council will be improving a vital community resource.

11. Dear Town Council,
I am writing to express my full support for the proposed installation of flush toilets and a new snack shack at Ford Field.

This will help the field and park massivly. The current port o potties are absouletly disgusting. When we are there for baseball games or other events, i dread it every time my child says they have to go to the bathroom. They cant be called "sanitary" and I am certain someone will get sick from them in the coming years.

The current Snack Shack is desperately outdated. The poor family that runs it currently is trying to juggle between lighting the BBQ, warming up items in the microwave, and move extension cords all the way around to make things happen. The snack shack is always used during baseball games and is a great feature of the field and game.

Ford Park serves our entire community, not only Little League families but also hikers, walkers, and picnickers. By acting now to support this project, the Council will be improving a vital community resource.

Agenda Item 9a, Study Session on Ford Field Restrooms & Snack Shack Comment
Hello
As a Ladera resident, past Windmill School and former Alpine Little League parent, Ford Field has been a constant destination and waypoint in our 36 years within the greater PV communities. I support the proposed improvements to the Ford Field Snack shack and the installation of flush toilets at the field. Ford Field is heavily used by the community, as it was intended, but the lack of permanent toilets makes it difficult for young families to use the facilities due to the space constraints of a porta potty, and they smell unless maintained daily. For walkers, of all ages, on the Crowder trail, a permanent toliet would be really useful. Also, a permanent flushing toilet will help the ecosystem of the Los Trancos Creek, keep human waste and urine out of the water ways. Improving/moving the snack shack will help maintain the beauty of the scenic corridor. Please vote yes on Ford Field infrastructure improvements.

Letters in Support of Ford Field Bathroom/Snack Shack Improvement From Kelly Arditi >
Date Tue 10/21/2025 7:15 PM
To z-PV Town Clerk (Shared) <[email protected]> You don't often get email from . Learn why this is important Dear Town of Portola Valley,
I am an Alpine Little League mom. I have a 3 time All Star now a 12U son and a 1 time All Star now 10U son. Needless to say, with these two kiddos, I spend a lot of time at the baseball field. Over the years, Ford Field has become such a special place for our family and is filled with so many memories.

There is nothing better than hanging at the ballpark with friends that feel like family and watching the kids play together, off the screens.

I am strongly supporting and encouraging the proposal to upgrade the bathrooms and Snack Shack hot water provisions. The bathrooms are unsanitary. I always feel a little embarrassed when we host another league.

I refuse to use the bathroom even on double header game days. I would rather go to the bathroom in the woods.

And the Snack Shack is a memory maker for sure! All the little siblings and fans love getting snacks during the games, and I love our after-game team dinners.

Ford Field will always have a special place in my heart. It is where my boys are growing up! Please consider making these changes for our kids and dedicated baseball families. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,
Kelly Arditi

Comment for Town Council Agenda Item 9(a), October 22, 2025 From Betsy Morgenthaler >

Subject:  October 22, 2025 Agenda Item 9a
At the request of Parks and Rec, Staff has asked Council to consider and provide direction on whether the moment has arrived to move forward on the available $180,000 in state grants (with a 20% match by the Town) to address Town needs at Ford Field* to replace the portable toilets and the snack shack as they are today.

I think it worth considering the uses independently and on their own merits.

Bathroom Useage
The parking lot at Ford Field gets intensive daily use. We provide very affordable parking for Zott’s employees and others who find convenient lunchtime parking and a pit stop there.  Sometime in the last 15 months the need for onsite portables grew from 2 to now 3 (likely for the additional holding capacity as I’ve never seen 3 in use).  Public bathrooms are an essential need; the portable toilets are meeting that need, flushable, sewer connected toilets and a sink would be an improvement.

Concession Stand Useage
Where bathrooms get daily use, the snack shack, run by a vender as I understand it, serves the 3 month Little League baseball season.  Of the surrounding Little League teams and their playing fields, Ford Field has the only “snack shack”. Other Leagues bring snacks to the site and on occasion supplement with food trucks.  AYSO and our Town soccer fields do not allow for the selling of concessions, but baseball is different, and the snack shack is grandfathered.

Proposed Expansion
The existing snack shack is 103 sq. ft.  The total proposed bathroom and concession stand buildout would be 340 sq ft.  Of the total, 50 sq ft would accommodate 2 ADA compliant bathrooms (ADA requires 25 sq ft, min.); leaving 290 sq. ft. for a sizable kitchen and concession stand.

The Council needs to weigh the Town’s most pressing needs against the financial risks and staff time to manage a rebuild on a tight time schedule. Whatever the decision, I offer 3 reasons to avoid building anything within the Alpine Road Scenic Corridor.

2) When Town leadership demonstrates respect for our governing laws, the General Plan and Muni Code, it contributes positively to collective compliance and cooperation, the virtuous cycle. If the Town were to make a ”convenient” exception for itself while imposing the higher, more costly standard on its residents, it would erode something precious. The expedient short term gain would come at a medium-term cost.

It isn’t worth it.
3) Sewer hook-ups are expensive but the lion’s share of that cost is attributable to the surveyors and sewer main to lateral line hook-up within the right of way. The permitting, traffic control, extensive excavation, refilling the trench with highly specific, layered materials, all followed by asphalting is where the cost is. By contrast with a trencher on site anyway, adding + X feet of additional trenching on the Town owned flat, unpaved soil is not consequential, unlikely to cost as much as $100/ft. The cost differential between locating the bathrooms in the middle of the Scenic Corridor and respecting the full 75 ft setback, would be on the order of $3,750. Such money invested in upholding the General Plan is money well spent.
___________________________________________________________ *I believe this came before the Council twice previously in the early 2000s and again in 2009. If there’s a record of understanding why the Town declined to proceed at those times it would inform the discussion.

Ford Field project - IN SUPPORT!

To z-PV Town Clerk (Shared) <[email protected]> You don't often get email from Learn why this is important Dear Town of Portola Valley,
I am writing to add my voice to the support of the proposed bathroom/snack shack upgrades to Ford Field. As a mom of 3 boys (all of whom are proud and active players in Alpine Little League) and one daughter (also a proud and participating member of Alpine Little League softball), I have come to have a love/hate relationship with Ford Field. It is mainly love, as it is a truly beautiful field, unlike any of the others my kids have played at in the district or section as all stars, or in the greater Bay Area for travel ball. When I tell people we live in Portola Valley, most comment on how beautiful Ford Field is, and how lucky we are to play there. Our family has so many happy memories not so much of the games played there, but the time after games when our community really comes together and the adults talk, the players start playing stickball and "pickle" back on the field but all mixed up, no longer one team against the other, and the siblings go off exploring looking for wildlife, collecting rocks etc.

The "hate" part of the love/hate relationship is ENTIRELY due to the bathroom situation, or lack thereof. The port-opotties there are some of the worst around. They're disgusting, and it's pretty disgusting that they are RIGHT next to the snack shack and picnic tables where we are all eating. This is not an exaggeration, but the toilet training of my daughter was delayed by 6-12 months because we were at Ford every weekend and 1-2 weekday evenings and there was no way I was going to take her into the port-o-potties if and when she had to use the restroom.

Alpine Little League is an invaluable part of the history and community of Portola Valley and our family is so proud to be a part of it. The town should be very proud of the league, its participants and (most of) Ford Field. The lack of bathrooms, on the other hand, is an embarrassment. Ford Field can and should host district, sectional, and regional Little League tournaments but not without functioning, safe bathrooms.

Thank you for your attention.

Sincerely,
Meghan Imrie Masters

—————-
I’d like to give a +1/support of all that Sangini Bedner has said in her letter regarding the facilities at Ford Field. As the town knows/has learned, we have a very special little league community and field in Portola Valley. Yet, it is a surprising outlier among all the other little league fields in the broader area in that it comes with unsanitary porta potty facilities and a rundown snack shack. Thank you for having this on the agenda and for your support of this initiative.

I would like to encourage the council to approve moving forward with new restrooms at Ford Field. The existing facilities are not sufficient and not up to the standard you find at other little fields or recreational facility in the Bay Area. Ford Field is a great community gathering place, not only for baseball, and is deserving of basic infrastructure like restrooms.

Thanks for your consideration.

Dear Town Council,
I strongly support the installation of flush toilets and the construction of a new Snack Concessions building at Ford Field. Upgrading the facilities will greatly improve sanitation, and a new structure will enhance the park’s appearance and visibility from Alpine Road. The current Snack Shack is long overdue for replacement.

Ford Field serves far more than our Little League community—it’s a gathering place for hikers, walkers, and families who come to enjoy the open space and picnic areas. If the Council moves forward with this effort, I am prepared to make a financial contribution to help bring it to life for Portola Valley and all who use the park.

Thank you for your ongoing dedication and support of Ford Field.
