Dear Mayor and Council Members,
Please represent us residents of Poway, and require the developer of "The Farm" to get VOTER APPROVAL for all changes to the originally approved plans.
When we voted for Prop.FF in 1988
it was to prevent the overbuilding of Poway's
remaining "open space" which, in my mind, also includes golf courses. Although voters in 2020 approved constructing 160 homes on the golf course and other recreational amenities, like a butterfly farm, on the club house site, there was no mention of a commercial gym.
Then the developer, Kevin McNamara, received an
offer from a commercial entity, Life Time, to build a 100,000 sf commercial (and probably expensive/exclusive) gym on the OPEN SPACE parcel.
Apparently, you
approved this when it was presented as a development review without any real public input.
Looks like this is designed to pull the wool over our eyes to achieve a desired outcome.
So, what do you elected officials not understand? We want you to be accountable to us and not have you blindly accept and rubber-stamp any proposals coming from the planning/development departments.
These employees have a vital interest in being
kept busy with building permits, rezonings, development reviews, etc. and not in preserving open space.
And as far as offering to put a proposal on the November ballot that essentially would allow LifeTime unlimited development on the club parcel (per the approved development review) instead of having LifeTime collect signatures to get it placed on the ballot:
if that isn't a sweetheart deal, what is?
So please do the right thing and act on behalf us residents and not a corporation. I want the developer/applicant to get its proposal on the ballot for voter approval, and not have you, our elected officials, do this work for LifeTime.
Thank you,
Gisela Koestner

Honorable Poway City Council,
We, the people of Poway, did not vote for this giant 30,500 square foot project! The fact that the city would even consider a 10 times increase over the original size, feels like an utter betrayal of the people's will.
Have our local leader forgotten their mission statement:
The City of Poway is committed to the preservation of natural open spaces, which is reflected in our "City in the Country" motto.
We, the people of Poway, implore you to be true to your credo of preservation of natural open spaces. 30,500 square feet of open space, a park, trails, playground and trees could be enjoyed by all residents. For FREE without the need of a membership.
We do not need 30,500 square feet of commercial building with a giant parking lot in "The Farm".
It is an environmental catastrophe and completely irresponsible to even consider this.
Sincerely,
Henning & Paige Grieme

Mayor Vaus,
This email is in response to the Lifetime application.
I strongly suggest that the city council reject putting the items on the ballot.
The traffic analysis form LLG has many holes in it, especially concerning square footage.
The Club Overlay district appears to be an attempt to side step and override the Specific Plan.
The voters voted in 2020 - this was not part of the plan and the city is giving Lifetime hundreds of free hours of consulting.
Meeting minutes should be published dating back to 2022.

I too wish there was a better option on the table,
but I think it's between lifetime or vacant lland for
3-5 years.
FYI it was my understanding that the original
plan for the space was designed with this other
company in mind to develop. They ended up
backing out of the deal do to "market
conditions". Then it went back out for bids and
lifetime was the only business willing to do the
devellop m ent.

Somasekhar Maradani Yes, Lifetime is a
very nice club. They are promoting this as a
boutique club, similar but smaller than the
one in La Jolla. It will !look different on the
exterior to match our community design. I
think it would add to our community for
those who value such a club and are looking
for walkable amenities.

Yes, the Lifetime roposed building is 1 Ox. the size in the plan.
Liietime builds massive iitness centers. Hi neighbo s,
I would like to input w perspective and opinion on the

There are at le-ast 3 entities w ich have interest in the developme:nt of NThe Club" in tl1e Farm ln Poway {Fr P) community : (1) the FIP residents, (2) the City of Poway, and {3) the GVCA (Green Valley Civic Association) .

{1) The IP residents should have the greatest interest since it affect s our co mu lt•i1 di ectly ln the to m of traffic, noise, ,md property values. (2} The Citv of Poway should be
:interested i terms of cit 1 traffic , safety, building codes, :zo11ing, etc. (3) The GVCA desires to retain the qtialiW of life of North Poway. We enjoy little to no commercia l development whi,e tak ing advantage of the close proximi~• to • ancho Ber ardo, Carmel Mountai . and the remai der of Poway
which has an abundance of health earn, shopping, difling, and other commercia l amenities.
The FIP i al Specific Plan was approved with Commercial recreatioMI and retail lots prior to an~, homes being

I’m contacting you regarding the proposed expansion of commercial space from 30,000 square feet to 100,000 square feet, using open space land for this expansion. We, the citizens of Poway, THE CITY IN THE COUNTRY, who elected you to office, approved 30,00 sq ft.
Instead of honoring what we approved, you are now trying to use land that was previously approved as OPEN SPACE. What, in this, do you not understand?
Where, in your original “planning” proposal, did we approve “unless the city council decides something different”?
Hasn’t the City Council done enough to remove the Country from City in the Country?
This is not the first time that the City Council tried to pull something over our eyes, and I, for one, am tired of these actions. The housing on Poway Rd that was supposed to be set back and now ominously looms over the street is a prime example of your irresponsible actions.
30,000 sq ft on OPEN SPACE LAND intended for recreation land (parks, etc, in case that’s unclear to you) means just that…30,000 sq ft with OPEN SPACE LAND INTENDED FOR RECREATIONAL USE
and NOT 100,000 sq
ft. usurping land intended for just that.
Remember the promise you made to the citizens of Poway to keep us THE CITY IN THE COUNTRY.

I am writing to voice my opinion re: the proposed Lifetime Fitness facility. I do not wish to see this facility built here in north Poway.
It is significantly beyond scope of what was marketed to the citizens of Poway prior to the election whereby light commercial was approved by the voters. All I can say is bait and switch.
Your predecessors fought hard to maintain open space and to keep commercial enterprise out of north Poway; let’s just throw out all that hard work.
I’m not interested in having additional cut through traffic on Avenida Florencia;residents and non residents alike continue to ignore speed limit and stop signage and no enforcement ever happens.
Thank you for your time and attention.

Thanks Brian. I do firmly want to add that I do believe Poway residents should be offered a limited time discount if they wish to join Life Time.
I think traffic / congestion are major
concerns of many people I talk to.
Giving Poway residents an opportunity to enroll to
participate at a discount would be very fair.
It would also help use non Poway revenue to
support the roads / streets usage.
I’ll look forward to the meeting tonight.

Dear Councilmembers,
My name is Steve Wickens, and I am a resident of Poway. I am writing to express my strong support for the proposed Life Time project.
The Life Time project will benefit Poway by:
1. Enhancing the community vision established by The Farm.
2. Providing amenities and services that contribute to the well-being of Poway families.
3. Offering a place for Poway to create memories together.
I respectfully urge you to support the approval of the Life Time Poway. Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
Steve Wickens

Hello Mayor Vaus and Council Members,
I am a long time Poway resident –who lives in Valle Verde Ranch neighborhood.
I was opposed
to the Farm development from the very beginning and now all my worries and trepidations are coming to fruition.
When I spoke to Mayor Vaus about my concerns (in the parking lot of the RB post office) he explained to me that we were lucky to have this type of development instead of some state mandated high density housing project.
I reluctantly agreed—but still felt the
development could have been better managed and more open space should have been secured.
I truly feel like Kevin McNamara who lives in my neighborhood –sold out the people of Poway for his own gain and that makes me very sad.
The traffic getting out of Poway at
Avenida Florencia is very dangerous.
Cars are speeding already from the stop signal at Valle Verde.
Having a large fitness center and pickle ball courts and all the other retail stores etc., will only MAKE TRAFFIC MORE DANGEROUS.
You have already approved a nursing
home/hospice center at the intersection of Valle Verde and Espola—which will impact traffic as well with emergency vehicles and the like.
I am NOT in favor of the propose LIFETIME FITNESS plans.
The council, Lennair, and
McNamara have already deceived the people of Poway—especially those who live on the perimeter.
The amount of development done due to poor management and planning of the topography of the land –where you ripped out long standing riparian growth especially back onto the once beautiful hills of Poway is shameful at best.
This was supposed to be the city in
the COUNTRY and now you are turning this into an urban jungle.
No amount of incidental tree
planting along Espola is ever going to take the place of the beautiful queen palms and other native species that were removed from that land.
DO THE RIGHT THING KEEP POWAY FROM BECOMING A PARKING LOT.
HOW MANY
ACCIDENTS ALONG ESPOLA WILL YOU ALLOW TO HAPPEN BEFORE YOU TAKE TRAFFIC INTO CONSIDERATION.
VOTE NO ON THIS DEVELOPMENT.
Thank you for you time and attention,
Sincerely,
Valerie Draper
