Item #13

Honorable Mayor Vaus, Deputy Mayor Maeda, and Council Members, I am delighted to see our Big Stone Lodge parcel finally showing up on the agenda tonight, being considered for it's transformational phase, back into a passive park. This was declared in 2008, and listed in our "City Owned Park Land" document as a passive park. Unfortunately, our city sold this park space to our Poway Housing Authority, despite protests from residents. Our mitigations funds account currently has the money to pay for the return of this park.
In 2020, we had a robust town hall meeting about this. Unfortunately the meeting minutes were not preserved by the city. The only feedback we received was that there would be "no new parks"
I wish I could feel delighted to see this finally show up on the agenda.
Unfortunately, I am so disappointed to see Our Big Stone Lodge become a campaign strategy for this upcoming election.
As residents of Poway, South Poway in particular, we have spent many years asking for appropriate attention to the situation of Big Stone Lodge, which has been deteriorating beyond repair, behind a rented fence for the past 23 years.
Deputy Mayor Maeda has been working directly with the residents of South Poway for the past year, and has been responsive to our concerns, especially about Big Stone Lodge. She has been trying to get this on the agenda for quite some time.
I am glad to see that we now have additional council members who are ready to support her original request. Please don't use our Big Stone Lodge as a campaign issue. Tonight's agenda item should appropriately be a follow up to Deputy Mayor Maeda's request, made on behalf of the residents of District 4, along with the rest of Poway. It's exciting to know that this can finally happen.
Thank You,
Marianna Bacilla
