I noticed a payment of approximately $37,000 to Desert Theatricals LLC, a for-profit business, for youth theater services.
I recognize this may be a routine payment under an existing contract. My concern is not with supporting youth theater, but with ensuring that public expenditures have a clearly identified purpose and benefit.
Rancho Mirage has a relatively small youth population, approximately 8% under age 18. How many Rancho Mirage young people benefit from this program?
If the purpose is to provide charitable or educational opportunities to youth throughout the Coachella Valley, beyond Rancho Mirage, that should be clearly identified. And if the expenditure is intended as charitable support, rather than payment for contracted services, why is it directed to a for- profit LLC rather than a nonprofit organization?
For future expenditures, I encourage the city to consider competitive proposals and clearly explain the intended beneficiaries and reasons for selecting a particular provider.
I support opportunities for young people throughout our region. My concern is simply that public funds be spent transparently, responsibly, and with a clearly established public purpose.
