Background/Analysis
On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a large-scale military invasion of Ukraine, a neighboring country to the southwest. As of today, Russian forces have caused extensive damage to residential and governmental buildings in several cities. More than 800,000 Ukrainian refugees have fled their country. The United Nations reported at least 136 deaths, but cautioned the death toll is likely much higher.
Countries around the globe including the United States are implementing sanctions on the Russian government, banks, and many wealthy Russians including Vladimir Putin himself.
President Biden delivered a harsh condemnation of Putin during his annual State of the Union address, which generated bipartisan applause for both his denunciation of the Russian invasion and the united response from the West in imposing punishing economic sanctions.
