Dear Mayor and City Council,
After many months and lengthy discussions with the Recreation and Parks Commission, Public Works Commission and Planning Commission, there is no question that Redondo Beach residents highly value trees and understand how tree regulations and requirements can improve our health, our environment, our property values, and much more.

All three commissions voted in general support of heritage tree designations, restrictions on driveway apron expansions and relocations, some regulations regarding tree planting requirements and removal requirements on private property, and a tree species list that considered threats of disease, and aesthetics. In setting short-term priorities, please consider the enthusiasm for and interest in trees and having some tree requirements adopted into the municipal code.

The City of Redondo Beach is late to the party in adopting a tree ordinance, and all but one other South Bay city specifically address trees in their municipal codes. The upside to this situation is that Redondo Beach has an opportunity to learn from others and create a model tree ordinance that meaningfully promotes trees’ care, protection, and replacement.

Based on the commissions’ discussions and many views in common, now seems like the moment for Redondo Beach to establish its own tree ordinance.

Thank you for the opportunity to help advance a tree ordinance and please make its fruition a top priority.

Sincerely,
Laura MacMorran
