TITLE
RECEIVE AND FILE A REPORT ON PARADE AND CELEBRATION OPTIONS FOR REDONDO
BEACH HIGH SCHOOL AND LOCAL YOUTH SPORTS TEAMS
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
On March 15, a referral was made by Councilmember Lowenstein to evaluate and provide a report on the impacts of hosting a parade to celebrate local high school and youth sports teams that recently captured prestigious soccer championships. The report provides a range of options available to honor these athletes. Given the various impacts of coordinating and securing parades and the City’s history and past practice for recognizing similar team achievements, it is recommended that the four teams be invited to City Hall to receive proclamations from the Mayor and City Council and celebrate their success as part of the first in-person meeting(s) to occur in the City Council Chambers in May.
BACKGROUND
The City of Redondo Beach has a rich history of supporting and celebrating the success of local youth, high school, and professional sports organizations. Over time, these celebrations have taken many forms, ranging from a multijurisdictional parade for the Los Angeles Kings, to the presentation of Commendations to individuals and teams that have achieved notable accomplishments.
Currently, four local soccer teams have enjoyed great success on the pitch, culminating in CIF championships for the Redondo Union High School (RUHS) girls and boys soccer teams, a Southern California Regional Title for the girls team, and Western States Championships for the American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO) Region 34 girls 8U and 10U teams.
Working with the Redondo Beach Police, Community Services, and Public Works Departments, staff has formulated several options for staging a parade to celebrate these remarkable achievements.
Factors such as participant safety; staff costs and resource demands; and traffic impacts to residents and businesses have been summarized for the identified options in the table below.

In order to minimize traffic congestion and the impact to Police resources, staff recommends a static event be hosted in the City Council Chambers as part of the first in-person City Council meetings to be held in May. The presence of the team participants and parents would be a great way to celebrate the community and reopen the Council Chambers to the public.
COORDINATION
The City Manager’s Office coordinated the preparation of this report with the Redondo Beach Police, Community Services, and Public Works Departments.
