How can you give yourselves an 80% raise when you've left the Fire Department understaffed, overworked, and without a path for advancement? With all due respect to the individual public servants who have filled the Interim Chief role, going from one Interim Fire Chief to another Interim Fire Chief without budgeting for a Permanent Fire Chief, demonstrates a lack of commitment to the rank and file. You're starving the department so that the union wants to go county. Why do Brand/Nehrenheim/Loewenstein/Obagi always find money for the things they want, but they don't care about what the residents want?

While I was disappointed to learn the LA DA determined that the Redondo Beach city council violated the spirit of the Brown Act, I was not surprised. Anytime two members bring forward a controversial issue and it gets immediate support from a third member and then survives a veto from the Mayor, one can understandably conclude that previous discussions about these topics had transpired before the meeting. Although, the Brown Act makes our democracy slow and arduous along with being very difficult to enforce, the Act is necessary to improve transparency and to make it more difficult for our representatives to be in cahoots. I support each member of the council. I believe you all want to do what is best for the city and I know it is a frustrating and thankless job much of the time. For the good of the city, please avoiding making your differences personal.
Recently, revelations about the LA city council have demonstrated again how personal animus can drive dehumanizing attitudes. Our community benefits from your respect of each other.

Anything that helps bring transparency to the proceedings can only garner more credibility for the result.

What if we just had one fireworks show on July 4th? Either the city-sponsored one or the Riviera Villagesponsored one? Or split the costs for one? I don't see why we need to have two. I understand that it's a continuation of a tradition from when a private donor used to sponsor a separate show with a barge off Torrance Beach, and now Riviera Village Association. Watching both consecutive fireworks shows this past July 4th, by the 20 minute mark, I genuinely felt like it was too long. Our guests agreed. And I felt bad knowing we were contributing to the PM 2.5 pollution that would blanket the LA basin in the following days.
During the show you could see a cloud of smoke develop after about 5 minutes of fireworks, and at a certain point the cloud began to obscure the fireworks themselves, such that you could only see the bottom half of the firework, if at all. IQ Air data show a PM 2.5 spike in all major metropolitan areas around July 4th, including in Los Angeles (https://www.iqair.com/us/newsroom/are-fireworks-bad-for-air-quality). Inland communities suffer the most from poor air quality, and we directly contribute to that burden.
In recent years, Mayor Brand has suggested having a fireworks show or a drone show for Juneteenth. Juneteenth is a federal holiday. Maybe we start a new tradition for Redondo Beach and partner with organizations like Culture Club South Bay for a Juneteenth celebration. Can the council consider exploring the use of this budget appropriation for a Juneteenth celebration instead of July 4th? And how about working with Riviera Village Association to have 1 show, and a barge that will be in the ocean at a point equidistant to both the Riviera Village AND Seaside Lagoon? After all, it’s only a 2 mile distance, so you can triangulate that quite well.
Two shows in one night is excessive. There's definitely a point where it goes from festive to excessive, I'm sorry to say. Hope there’s interest in finding a better, more sustainable way of celebrating.
