EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The California Office of Traffic Safety awarded a grant in the amount of $40,000 to the City of Redondo Beach to participate in their “Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Program.” The grant period begins October 1, 2022 and ends September 30, 2023. The award is a reimbursement grant with no matching funds required.
BACKGROUND
The goal of the “Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Program” campaign is to reduce the number of persons killed and injured in crashes involving pedestrians and bicyclists. The funding strategies will include classroom education, bicycle rodeos, community events, presentations and workshops.
Officers will schedule and participate in “Bicycle Rodeos” in partnership with the Beach Cities Cycling Coalition and the Redondo Beach Unified School District. These “Bicycle Rodeos” will educate Redondo Beach school children on the importance of following the “rules of the road” both as pedestrians and as bicycle riders, how to safely and properly ride their bicycles and how to perform a safety check on their bicycles before riding them. Additionally, officers will distribute bicycle helmets to children in need of one as well as provide them educational materials. The grant funds will increase the enforcement of bicycle and pedestrian traffic with an emphasis on the violations which are the primary causes of traffic collisions. Enforcement, as well as any administrative time for tasks required to meet the grant reporting requirements, will occur on an overtime basis.
COORDINATION
The Police Department will ensure compliance with the grant requirements and coordinate all final performance reports and reimbursement claims with the California Office of Traffic Safety for the operational period. The Police Department has coordinated the grant agreement with the Financial
