Summary:
Originally established in 1892, the Redondo Beach Police Department is comprised of 89 sworn police officers, 53 civilian support staff with 30 volunteers. In 2021, the total number of arrests made by the Redondo Beach Police Department was 2,326. Of those arrests, 429 were for public intoxication and 884 were for driving under the influence; about 56 % of our total arrests for 2021 were for alcohol related violations. This year from January 2022 to the present date, there have been a total of 266 arrests for public intoxication and 241 were for driving under the influence.
Alcohol related violations are a great concern to the community of Redondo Beach. Underage drinking, public intoxication and DUIs have a huge impact on the residents’ safety and Quality of Life. There has been an exponential growth in the homeless population within the City of Redondo Beach which has added to the alcohol related calls for service the police department is forced to respond and address.
Redondo Beach City Prosecutor Joy Ford is assigned to prosecuting Quality of Life criminal cases and supports enforcement for all A.B.C. related violations. The Police Department also makes it a priority to reduce alcohol consumption by minors in our community. We enjoy a cooperative relationship with A.B.C. and would forward all cases for administrative review and/or prosecution through A.B.C
The City of Redondo Beach is a recreational destination beach community, approximately ten miles west of Los Angeles. Redondo Beach is home to approximately 68,000 citizens living in an area of about 6.2 square miles. Within the city limits there are a total of 242 A.B.C. locations within Redondo Beach, including 49 “Off-Sale” locations.
The Redondo Beach Police Department has partnered with ABC in the past and have been awarded GAP Grants and have attended the 3-day ABC Conferences in prior years.
