I am concerned about the language in this ordinance prohibiting bicycle riding on portions of the pier. Section 12-

2.07 includes this language on bicycle riding: "Bicycle riding is prohibited on any portion of any pier, wharf, public area, parking structure, or City-owned property where noted, except as may be otherwise provided for in this Code." This section is found in the current municipal code, but I have questions regarding where you can and cannot ride bikes on the pier parking structure and at city-owned property.

Recently the RBPD posted a video to Instagram showing new "Walk Bike" signs painted on the pier parking structure at the portions of the bike path that go through the structure. These signs are new and are ostensibly prohibiting riding bikes through the dedicated portion of Class I bike lane in the structure. There were 200 comments on the video, with many people wondering the reason for this change, and describing that they ride through the parking lot portion often and do so safely.

Why this change? Bikes are very efficient modes of transit and countless people ride along the Marvin Braude Trail every day for work or enjoyment. It's one of the few fully protected routes in LA that connect multiple cities.

Sections just to the South of the structure have always been walk-only, but it doesn't make sense to have sections inside the structure be walk-only as well, as pedestrians and cars typically yield to bikes inside the structure at crossings. If concerned about collisions, install better lighting inside. If interested in collecting data, install bike counters along the bike path. We shouldn't hamper a sustainable and popular means of transit based on unsubstantiated fears. Please revisit this language and revisit the "Walk Bike" signs on the Class I bike lane inside the pier parking structure. Thank you.
