AND THE OPTIONS AND COSTS FOR RAISING THE PRIDE FLAG IN FRONT OF CITY HALL ADOPT BY TITLE ONLY RESOLUTION NO. CC-2303-027 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY

COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF REDONDO BEACH, CALIFORNIA RECOGNIZING JUNE AS PRIDE MONTH

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
At the January 3, 2023 Council meeting, a referral was made to staff to prepare an item to discuss the possible adoption of a resolution declaring June as Pride Month and to consider raising the Pride flag in front of City Hall.

BACKGROUND
Pride Month is a month-long observance in celebration of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and Questioning, Intersex, Asexual and more (LGBTQIA+) people and the history, culture, and contributions of these people and their communities. The practice of celebrating Pride began after the 1969 Stonewall riots, a series of gay liberation protests that took place in New York City.

At the January 3, 2023 Council meeting, a referral was made to staff to prepare an item to discuss the possible adoption of a resolution declaring June as Pride Month, which is attached here for Council’s consideration.

The referral also requested that Council be presented options for raising the Pride flag in front of City Hall. Staff has prepared the below cost estimates for Council’s consideration. Council may choose one of three options: 1) to raise the Pride flag on the existing flagpole along with the U.S. flag, 2) to install a new permanent flagpole in front of City Hall, or 3) to install one or more temporary flagpoles in front of City Hall. The possible location of the new flagpole or flagpoles can be reviewed in Exhibit B. Staff is seeking direction on which of these options, if any, Council prefers.
