RESOLUTION NO. CC-2303-027
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
REDONDO BEACH, CALIFORNIA, RECOGNIZING JUNE AS
PRIDE MONTH
WHEREAS, on June 28, 1969, the Stonewall Riots occurred in New York City; and WHEREAS, this event is largely considered the turning point in the modern history of the LGBTQIA+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and Questioning, Intersex, Asexual and more) rights movement; and
WHEREAS, it is one of the responsibilities of the City Council of Redondo Beach to recognize occasions of outstanding significance; and
WHEREAS, the City of Redondo Beach supports the rights of every citizen to experience equality and freedom from discrimination; and
WHEREAS, all people regardless of age, race, color, religion, marital status, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity, or physical challenges have the right to be treated on the basis of their intrinsic value as human beings; and WHEREAS, the City of Redondo Beach accepts and welcomes people of diverse backgrounds and believes a diverse population leads to a more vibrant community; and WHEREAS, the LGTBQIA+ communities contribute to the cultural, civic and economic successes of the City of Redondo Beach; and
WHEREAS, while much progress has been made to enable LGBTQIA+ people to fully participate in the civic life of our country and our state with all the rights, privileges, and responsibilities that that entails, there are still roadblocks that LGBTQIA+ people face with respect to their unalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness; and WHEREAS, recognizing June as Pride Month is a step towards confirming the City Council’s commitments and actions to advance equity, justice and accountability;
NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF REDONDO BEACH, CALIFORNIA, DOES HEREBY RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS:
SECTION 1. The City of Redondo Beach hereby proclaims June to be Pride Month.
SECTION 2. The City Clerk shall certify to the passage and adoption of this resolution and shall enter the same in the Book of Original Resolutions.
