Dear Mayor Brand, Council Members, City Manager Witzansky, In advance of your council meeting next week, I am writing to update you on some recent League of California Cities developments that may be of interest to you.
When the Cal Cities Board of Directors met last month in Artesia, Board members focused on how Cal Cities can strengthen its advocacy for local solutions to the housing crisis. Following a closed session, the Board directed Cal Cities to proactively drive a housing agenda that respects local decisionmaking and launch a public awareness campaign that showcases the work cities are doing on housing.
The Board also approved preliminary recommendations to strengthen and enhance the Cal Cities General Assembly in time for this year’s Annual Conference in Sacramento. These recommendations – which Cal Cities drew directly from the input of member cities, including Redondo Beach – included: updating the voting delegates selection guidelines, changing the timing of the General Assembly, and exploring the use of electronic voting technology. The Board will consider additional updates and recommendations during the next Board meeting, April 14-15 in Sacramento.
Cal Cities delivers major victories for cities year after year, fighting for local control, securing billions of dollars in new funding, and protecting existing resources. I’ve included our Cal Cities Delivers Win Record that demonstrates our success record in 2022.
We trust that this information will be useful to you and hope that you will continue your membership with Cal Cities.
Thank you for your ongoing engagement to strengthen the collective work of California’s cities to improve the quality of life for all California residents.
Sincerely,
Carolyn M. Coleman
