Item P1: DISCUSSION AND POSSIBLE ACTION REGARDING THE PROPOSED
PROCESS TO DESIGN AND FABRICATE A PRIDE FLAG FOR REDONDO BEACH Position: Respectfully Oppose
We are writing to express our sincere appreciation for the city council's support of the LGBTQIA+ community in Redondo Beach. We are particularly grateful for the city's willingness to consider different ways of celebrating Pride month.
However, we respectfully oppose the idea of hosting a competition to design a new pride flag for the city. While we understand the good intentions behind this idea, the LGBTQIA+ community is diverse, and any decision about how to represent this community should be made in consultation with its members.
Since this is the first time that our city is officially recognizing Pride Month, and we are limited in time to explore our options, we would recommend that the city on utilizing a known, common and recognizable symbol that facilitates creating a collective sense of community and belonging. We recommend raising the Progress Pride Flag in alignment to the similar decision made by the LA County Board of Supervisors1.
In addition to raising the Progress Pride Flag this year, we would like to recommend that the city create a task force to invite others to participate and discuss how best we wish to be represented in a future permanent installation recognizing the LGBTQIA+ community in preparation for 2024 and beyond. Similar to how our neighbors in Hermosa Beach and Manhattan Beach have recognized theirs. This group will provide 1 LA County Board of Supervisors, Statement of Proceedings, 3/7/2023 (page 18) https://file.lacounty.gov/SDSInter/bos/sop/1138840_030723.pdf 1 of 3
valuable insights into the needs and desires of the community and ensure that any decisions made are inclusive and representative.
We wish to express our sincere appreciation for the support and allies we have on the City Council, and hope you will consider our recommendations.
Sincerely,
