Dear City Council, City Manager, and Staff,
So sorry not to join you in person tonight.
As we finalize plans for this years’ budget, I would like to ask for parks to get adequate funding for maintenance, and especially to support the Veterans Park Senior Center’s volunteers who have been trying to enhance their patio area with landscaping, irrigation, and weeding for many years.
Seniors who have been trying to volunteer at this center need the park crews’ support or we will lose valuable volunteer help. That would be sad.
Before our esteemed Senior Club member, Fusako Cahill, started gardening in the patio dirt, it was a depressing eyesore. Gradually, over many years, Fusako added many plants to beautify this area. When the poppies sprang up we cheered!
In the past years, I have personally helped in the patio garden, but had to stop because I ran out of wood chips for my section of weed suppression. We asked for one more load, but it never came. I kept waiting, then finally abandoned my project.
City Park Landscaping met with us to plan one more irrigation spigot so we wouldn’t have to drag a long hose across the entire width of the patio area to water the far end. We never saw them again. We thought we had a plan.
We needed to have our green-waste barrels emptied occasionally, but no one ever came. The huge wheelbarrow filled with water, so Fusako could not access that. Instead, she tried to bail it out, but it was a daunting task.
There is a crew for the adjoining Veterans Park landscaping, right outside our gate, but they don’t consider the Senior Center part of their assigned tasks, apparently.
Please consider our ask that Veterans Park Senior Center Patio be added to the park maintenance schedule.
I have been hoping that Seniors and other residents be viewed as partners with the city to accomplish great things.
This could be the start of something great.
Deepest Thanks
Respectfully,
Barbara Epstein
