Notice of Special Meeting of the Redondo Beach City Council from
Mayor Bill Brand
June 28, 2023
2:00 p.m.
As presiding officer of the Redondo Beach City Council, according to Section
8.3 and 9.3 of the City Charter, and as specified in the Ralph M. Brown Act, California Government Code Section 54956 (see below), hereby call a Special Meeting of the Redondo Beach City Council on Thursday, June 29th, 2023, at 4:30 p.m., in the Council Chambers of the City of Redondo Beach, at 415 Diamond St. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss and decide whether to contract with a vendor to provide a drone show in King Harbor on the 4 of July.
Last week, the City was forced to announce the cancellation of its annual 4th of July Fireworks show, when the City's contracted fireworks vendor withdrew due to concerns over new permit requirements implemented by the Los Angeles Regional Water Quality Control Board. Since that time, City personnel have been working to notify the public of the fireworks cancellation and to enhance the number and type of recreational activities provided at the Seaside Lagoon on the Holiday.
On June 27th the City was contacted by a drone operator (Sky Elements LLC) with interest and availability to provide a discounted drone show in the waterfront as an alternative to the fireworks display. After being contacted, staff members have worked with the vendor to determine drone pricing and contract terms. As there is no regularly scheduled City Council Meeting prior to the July 4'h Holiday to discuss a drone show event, and in recognition of the fact that the community is significantly disappointed by the cancellation of the 4th of July Fireworks show, I am calling for a special meeting to consider approval of a contract (which is required) for the above.
Bill Brand,
D.C.0
Mayor
City of Redondo Beach
54956.
