IN THE LEAGUE OF CALIFORNIA CITIES (CAL CITIES)
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
At the July 18, 2023 City Council meeting, a referral was made to staff to prepare an item to discuss possible reinstatement of the City’s membership in the League of California Cities, (“Cal Cities”).
BACKGROUND
Cal Cities is a nonprofit, public benefit corporation comprised of roughly 480 cities throughout California. The purpose of the organization, per Cal Cities Mission/Vision Statement, is “to expand and protect local control for cities through education and advocacy to enhance the quality of life for all Californians. Our vision is to be recognized and respected as the leading advocate for the common interests of California’s cities.” Redondo Beach’s 2022 annual Cal Cities membership dues totaled $22,271.25. The City of Redondo Beach was a member of Cal Cities for over 80 years.
The City Council previously discussed Cal Cities membership on December 20, 2022 and March 21, 2023, and voted 3-2 to discontinue membership for the 2023 calendar year.
FISCAL IMPACT
Reinstatement of the City’s membership in Cal Cities would result in annual membership cost of roughly $22,000.
