The pier skate park has provided an ongoing opportunity for learning and improvement on how to enhance our public spaces for recreation and enjoyment. People began using the skate park before it officially opened, and the city learned that there was a need for more signage to communicate hours, and security to enforce the hours.

Thanks to city staff for responding to those needs and thanks to Public Works for adding signage and responding to the request of vendors to install a water refill station.

I understand that the skate park has posed challenges with enforcing the city ordinance prohibiting bikes and skateboards on other parts of the pier because skaters use bikes or boards to ride to the skate park.

Acknowledging this, I think it would be helpful for the city to install bike racks and skateboard racks at the skate park. Adjacent to these racks, perhaps install signage reinforcing that there is no active riding of bikes or skateboard on the pier outside the skate park (I'm not sure if such a sign is already present). This way, we ensure skaters are informed about the rules. And the racks ensure that people are not locking up onto the railings. The city may want to add planters for additional enhancements, along with the planned mural.

Also, I remember the skate park was supposed to be a multi-purpose space for the outdoor yoga classes or concerts. Has this been the case and is this still the intent? I'm not sure how easy it would be to "shut down" the skate park for other uses.
