Subject: Request for Increase Police Patrols Around Daycare Facilities Dear Mayor Light and City Council Members:
I hope this letter finds you well. My name is Michael Fowler, and I am a concerned resident of the South Bay. My wife and I moved to the South Bay three years ago, in large part because the area is so family- friendly. We have two young daughters that attend Savoir Faire Language Institute in Redondo Beach. I am writing to bring to your attention a matter that is of significant importance to the safety and well- being of our community, particularly around the area encompassing Savoir Faire and the nearby restaurants and retail stores.
Over the past year, we have noticed an increase in the foot traffic and overall activity around this part of the South Bay, owing to the presence of several popular restaurants, retail establishments, and other amenities. While this growth is undoubtedly positive for our local economy, it has also brought about some challenges in terms of public safety, especially concerning the proximity of these businesses to Savoir Faire.
The safety of our children should be our top priority, and I believe that increasing police patrols in this area would contribute significantly to creating a secure environment for both the daycare facility and the families who utilize its services. With the potential for increased traffic and activity, it becomes imperative to ensure that law enforcement presence is heightened to deter any potential criminal activity and to respond promptly to any emergency situations that may arise.
I kindly request that you consider and advocate for an increase in police patrols around Savoir Faire, the adjacent restaurants, and retail stores. This proactive measure would undoubtedly provide reassurance to parents and guardians, allowing us to feel confident in the safety of our children while attending the daycare facility.
I understand that the City Council has numerous responsibilities, but the safety and security of our community should always remain a top priority. Your efforts in addressing this concern would be greatly appreciated by the residents of Redondo Beach and neighbouring South Bay cities.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to hearing about any actions taken to address this matter and contribute to the overall safety of our community.
Yours sincerely,
Michael Fowler

Dear City Council,
The homocide that took place early morning of Feb. 16th on the stairwell at the Redondo Beach Pier has left every parent feeling shaken. Unfortunately we understand the circumstances we are living in today- that is the increasing homeless population, lack of gun control, mental health crises, and limited resources. However, as parents of a 3 year old attending Savoir Faire, we believe we have the ability and the will to do better. We cannot let these sorts of crimes happen in our community; especially with such close proximity to a pre- school. We are asking for more surveillance around the perimeter of the pre- school during school hours. Having a police department just yards away should make this ask feasible. Ensuring extra surveillance will hopefully have criminals steer clear of the area and allow the children to enjoy their days feeling safe and secure. Thank you for your protection.

Hello,
I'd love to assist Maestra Zoila in writing a formal letter. However, I'd like a little more background so that I know what to include in it.
Are there any specific reasons why you feel that more police patrolling is necessary? I did see the police had an incident at the pier recently, but have no background on that.
As a parent, I would like to know what the specific concerns are as well.
The safety of the children is most important- and I am happy to draft up a letter.
Thanks,

Re: Savoir Faire Language Institute Preschool on Redondo Pier, CA My name is Agata Szczepanska and I am the Mother of Timothy Shepansky, who attends Savoir Faire Language Institute Preschool ( SFLI).
I would like to support Mrs. Nordwood' s petition to add more police patrols around SFLI schools, especially between drop off ( 7. 30 am- 9: 00 am) and pick up hours ( 3. 30 pm - 5. 30 pm).
Just this month there has been a homicide case that took place literally around the corner of my 5y old son' s preschool.
Occasionally I keep seeing homeless people walking around the proximity of the school and that makes me feel uneasy as a mother of 2 small children.
There used to be a police station on the pier next door, but it' s under construction now and we don' t feel as safe anymore ever since it got temporarily closed..
I believe our children deserve a safe environment to learn and develop without having to worry about potential dangers lurking around their preschool.
We would like to kindly ask for more police patrols around our preschool, as well as possibly arranging a training for the parents ( even if it' s just a zoom call) on how to act in case of an emergency.
Kind Regards,
Worried Parent of a preschooler, Agata Szczepanska
Request for additional police coverage near Savoir Faire Language Institute February 26, 2024
To Whom It May Concern,
I am writing to request additional police coverage near the Redondo Beach Pier. More specifically, near Savoir Faire Language Institute ( SFLI), located at: 117 and 119 W Torrance Blvd, Redondo Beach, CA 90277. SFLI is a multi-language preschool that educates and cares for young children ( infants to five years old).
I' ve recently learned of a murder occurring in the parking garage below where my two boys go to school, and to my knowledge, the suspect hasn' t been found. I' m sure you can understand the unsettling, unsafe and scared feeling this produces each day I drop my kids off at school.
Please help keep our precious children safe by increasing police coverage at this location. SFLI is open between the hours of 7: 30am- 5: 30pm. At the very least, we would appreciate additional coverage during school hours.
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,

There was recently a murder reported literally steps away from where children are dropped off every day. Personally, I drop by five year and one year old children off at school every day. As of last reported, the motive for the shooting is unknown and there is no word on a suspect description. Put very simply, the murderer is still out there in our community.
I am sure you can appreciate the concern this is creating for my family and other families in the community. Please help to ensure the safety of the community by allocating additional police resources at or near SFLI. The school operates from 7: 30am— 5: 30pm; those are the most critical hours to provide extra support. The murderer is still out there. Having additional police visibility near our children will at least help to keep them away from our children.
Sincerely,

Dear Councilmen Nils, Todd, Zein, Scott and Councilwoman Paige, I am a resident of Redondo Beach and send my child to Savoir Faire Language Institute Preschool on the Redondo Beach Pier and am concerned about my four year old' s safety. As you are aware, there was an incident on February 16th involving a gun and a homicide just outside the window of 35 children and their educators. This is where you, our elected officials, come into play. We have voted for you, above all else, to keep our treasured community safe. While guns at schools are becoming a recurring nightmare around the United States, many times as parents we feel helpless against the lobbyists and politicians making changes to keep our kids safe. However, this is close to home, this is somewhere we can actually take the necessary steps to stop this. You have the power to make changes so we are not another city in the national news. Please take this as top priority. We need to address the unhoused people in proximity to our children' s school, as well as the gun violence that came much too close to our babies and teachers. While I am no expert in security, it seems we need to have a place for unhoused people to be safely and professional monitoring of the area around the pier and school.
I read each of your bios and it seems most of you are parents. Many of you included community safety as a top priority. I am so happy we are on the same page. Thank you for your service in representing our community and the best city in the world!
Warmly,
Leah and Skyler Maiman

To the City Council of Redondo Beach,
I add my voice to the petition for increased police patrolling around the Savoire Faire Immersion School on Torrance Blvd.
We are very disturbed by the tragedy that occurred at the Pier on February 16. We place a great deal of trust in the City of Redondo Beach by sending our one- year- old, the most precious thing in our lives, to attend daycare in your community.
With this latest violence, and an housed community that frequents the beach and bus stop, it is now imperative that additional police patrols are allocated to the area around Savoire Faire. I plead with you to do all in your power to maintain Redondo Beach as a community where families and children are safe.

Hello to whom it may concern,
I definitely feel it is overdue to start to monitor the activity that takes place at the pier. I live within walking distance and have felt unsafe by the people that hang out in the area. There are alot of transient people even sleeping in public on the pier and It personally starts to attract a crowd that is not positively representative of the surrounding areas.
My 3 year old child attends a very elite preschool at the pier and it is scary to think that the surrounding foot and car traffic isn't being properly patrolled on foot during the business hours.
Please take the recent events into consideration as a cry for help and a wakeup call to start to make some serious changes.
Thank you,

We would like to formally request for additional police protection at the Redondo pier and especially around the savoir faire school. We have two young children who attend and seeing as there was a murder there, we would feel much safer with additional police patrol.

Dear Mrs. Norwood and the City Council of Redondo Beach, I am writing to express our strong support for the initiative proposed by Mrs. Norwood to increase police patrols around our schools, specifically during the hours of 7: 30 AM to 5:30 PM. As parents of a child attending Savoir Faire, the safety and well- being of our children are of utmost importance to us.
The request for additional police presence is not only reasonable but necessary. The times before, during, and after school are when our children are most vulnerable. Increased police patrols will not only enhance safety but also serve as a deterrent for potential threats and ensure a quicker response in case of emergencies.
Furthermore, a visible police presence contributes to a safer community overall, making the school environment feel more secure for students, staff, and parents alike. It also fosters a positive relationship between law enforcement and our youth, building trust and respect from an early age.
We are confident that with the collective voice of our parent community, we can make a significant impact on the decision- making process at the City Council meetings. Our children deserve to learn in an environment where their safety is given priority, and this initiative is a crucial step towards achieving that goal.
Thank you for your attention to this matter and for your ongoing efforts to maintain a safe and happy learning environment for our children. Please count on our full support for this petition.
Sincerely,
The Mourino Thurnher Family

Dear Redondo Beach City Council Members,
Subject: Petition for Enhanced Safety Measures at Redondo Beach Pier We are writing to you as concerned parents as our daughter attends Savoir Faire Language Institute and Immersion Pre- School at the Redondo Beach Pier. We want the City Council to recognize the pressing issue of safety at the Redondo Beach Pier and take proactive steps to enhance safety measures. On August 25, 2021 there was a shooting at the pier and two weeks ago there was a man found fatally shot in the parking structure. The pier is supposed to be a safe environment for our pre- school, the local businesses and for the recreational activity for locals and visitors alike. However, this recent shooting necessitates immediate action to ensure the well- being of all who frequent the pier.
We urge the City Council to take proactive steps to enhance safety at the Redondo Beach Pier.
Specifically, we propose the following measures:
1. Enhanced Security Patrols: Increase the presence of law enforcement officers and security personnel to provide a visible deterrent to crime and ensure rapid response to any emergencies.
2. Emergency Response Preparedness: Ensure that emergency response protocols are in place and readily accessible to address any accidents, medical emergencies, or security incidents that may occur on or near the pier.
By implementing these measures, we believe that the Redondo Beach Pier can continue to be a vibrant and enjoyable destination for residents and visitors while prioritizing the safety and well- being of our preschool and their teachers and students. We urge the City Council to prioritize this issue and allocate the necessary resources to enact these changes promptly.
Thank you for your attention to this matter. We look forward to your swift action in addressing these safety concerns and making the Redondo Beach Pier a safer place for everyone.
Sincerely,
taid

To the honorable members of the City Council,
My name is Ian Phillips, and I am a resident of Redondo Beach for over seven years. I am writing to you as a concerned parent, whose daughter Isla attends the Savoir Faire preschool on the Redondo Beach Pier.
I love this community, and I appreciate the beauty and diversity of the pier. It is a place where families can enjoy the ocean, the restaurants, and the shops. It is also a place where my daughter receives a quality education, in a nurturing and stimulating environment.
However, I am deeply troubled by the recent incidents of violence that occurred in the vicinity of the pier. Earlier this month, there was a homicide in the parking garage under the preschool. Over the summer, there was another homicide on the other side of the pier complex. These events have shaken my confidence in the safety of the area, and have made me fear for the well-being of my daughter and the other children who attend the preschool.
I do not want to take my daughter out of the Savoir Faire preschool, because I believe it is a great place for her to learn and grow. I also do not want to avoid the pier, because I think it is a valuable asset for the community. But I do want to see some concrete actions taken by the City Council, to ensure that the pier is a safe and secure place for everyone.
Therefore, I respectfully request that the City Council increase the police presence and surveillance on the pier, especially in the areas where the preschool and the parking garage are located.
I thank you for your attention and your service to the community. I hope that you will take my petition seriously, and act swiftly to address this urgent issue. I look forward to hearing from you, and to seeing positive changes on the pier.
Sincerely,
Ian Phillips
Dear City Council members,
I' m Victoria Phillips, a resident of Redondo Beach and a parent of a preschooler. My daughter Isla goes to Savoir Faire, a wonderful preschool on the pier. I' m writing to you because I' m really worried about the safety of the pier and the people who live, work, and visit there.
I love this community, and I appreciate the diversity, culture, and beauty that it offers. I also love the preschool, which provides a nurturing, stimulating, and safe environment for my daughter and other children.
But lately, I' ve been feeling scared and anxious because of the violence that has happened near the pier. Earlier this month, someone was killed in the parking garage under the preschool. Over the summer, another person was killed on the other side of the pier complex. These events have shaken me and other parents, who fear for the safety of our children and ourselves. We are worried that the pier has become a hotspot for crime, and that the current security measures are not enough to stop more tragedies.
That' s why I' m asking you to please do something to increase the police presence and surveillance on the pier. I' m asking you to allocate more resources and personnel to patrol the area, install more cameras and lighting, and enforce the existing laws and regulations.
My family loves this community and this preschool. We want to continue to enjoy the pier, and to support the local economy and culture. But I also want to feel secure and confident that my daughter and I are not in danger. I believe that you have the power and the responsibility to make that happen.
Thank you for listening and for your service. I hope that you will take my request seriously, and that you will act quickly and effectively to protect the Redondo Beach Pier and its people.
Thank you,
Victoria Phillips
