APPROVE THE RETIREMENT OF POLICE CANINE "AXEL," ALLOW SERGEANT AARON PLUGGE, THE K-9’S HANDLER, TO PURCHASE AXEL FROM THE CITY FOR ONE DOLLAR, AND AUTHORIZE
THE MAYOR TO EXECUTE THE PROPOSED CANINE TRANSFER AGREEMENT
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Canine Axel is approximately 7.5 years old and has served the residents of Redondo Beach for more than five years. Axel has lived with Sergeant Plugge and his family for the duration of his service career. Axel has reached the end of his service life. The Police Department recommends the City Council approve his retirement and allow Sergeant Plugge to purchase him for the sum of one dollar.
BACKGROUND
The City of Redondo Beach purchased canine Axel more than five years ago. He has lived and worked with recently promoted sergeant Aaron Plugge twenty-four hours a day for over five years.
During this time, Axel has participated in more than 130 searches for criminal suspects, explosives, and contraband in the City of Redondo Beach and other communities in the South Bay. Axel has dutifully reached the end of his service life.
The Police Department recommends the Council approve the accompanied Canine Ownership Transfer Agreement, and approve the sale of Canine Axel to Sergeant Plugge for the sum of one dollar. This serves the best interest of the canine, the Canine Unit, and the City of Redondo Beach.
COORDINATION
The Canine Ownership Transfer Agreement has been approved as to form by the City Attorney's Office.
FISCAL IMPACT
There is no cost to the City for the retirement of Canine Axel. The sale of the canine will result in a one-dollar payment to the City.
