Hello to the City Council, staff, and residents of Redondo Beach. As summer gets underway, I wanted to share with you a few resources from South Coast AQMD to help you stay up-to-date on your air quality, as well as other important matters.

Our local AQI (Air Quality Index) is calculated based on common air pollutants including particulate matter (PM2.5 & PM10), ozone (smog), carbon monoxide, and nitrogen dioxide. You can always check your real-time air quality on our website at www.aqmd.gov, at the bottom of the home page. See your real-time air quality, check out today’s forecast, or tomorrow’s, too. You can also sign up for alerts to receive notifications when air quality in your area changes.

Wildfire Season is Here!
Wildfires can often cause very high air pollution levels that are harmful to your health, even in areas many miles away from the fire. Older adults, young children, pregnant women, and people with heart diseases or lung diseases (such as asthma) may be especially sensitive to health risks from wildfire smoke.

Protect your health by taking steps before, during, and after a wildfire to reduce how much pollution you are breathing. You can get air quality information and forecasts by downloading the South Coast AQMD mobile app and signing up for advisories at AirAlerts.org. For more information and tips on protecting yourself before, during, and after a wildfire, visit https://tinyurl.com/tips-wildfire.

Replace Your Ride
Starting July 1, 2024, the new maximum incentive for South Coast AQMD’s Replace Your Ride Program will increase to $12,000! Additional updates to the program, effective July 1, mean you’ll be able to apply to replace your 2010 or older vehicle with a 2017 or newer, cleaner running Plug-in Hybrid, Fuel Cell, or Battery Electric Vehicle.

This program is available to vehicle owners residing within the South Coast AQMD Jurisdiction who meet income and vehicle requirements. Applying to the program is 100% free! For more information, please go to www.replaceyourride.com. _

Dear Council Members: OPPOSE Short Term Rentals!
Short-term rentals anywhere in the city are a bad idea, particularly in District 1. They go against the philosophy of providing affordable housing, as they decrease the housing stock available for renters who wish to live long-term in Redondo Beach and potentially become permanent residents. This scarcity can drive up rental prices, making housing less affordable for local residents.

The profitability of short-term rentals can inflate property values, which can make it difficult for local buyers, especially first-time homebuyers, to afford properties. Investors would love the idea and would love you for supporting it.

I suggest we use our existing laws to fine and take legal action against persistent violators who do not respect our city laws. This enforcement will help ensure compliance and protect our community.
