Hello and thank you to the City Council, staff, and residents of Redondo Beach. I'd like to share the following news from our agency, the South Coast Air Quality Management District:

Wildfire Season is Here!
Wildfires can often cause very high air pollution levels that are harmful to your health, even in areas many miles away from the fire. Older adults, young children, pregnant women, and people with heart diseases or lung diseases (such as asthma) may be especially sensitive to health risks from wildfire smoke.

Protect your health by taking steps before, during, and after a wildfire to reduce how much pollution you are breathing. For more information and tips to stay safe, visit https://tinyurl.com/tips-wildfire Replace Your Ride
Starting July 1, 2024, the new maximum incentive for South Coast AQMD’s Replace Your Ride Program will increase to $12,000! Additional updates to the program, effective July 1, mean you’ll be able to apply to replace your 2010 or older vehicle with a 2017 or newer, cleaner running Plug-in Hybrid, Fuel Cell, or Battery Electric Vehicle.

This program is available to vehicle owners residing within the South Coast AQMD Jurisdiction who meet income and vehicle requirements. Applying to the program is 100% free! For more information, please go to www.replaceyourride.com.

VW Mitigation Trust Fund – Transit and Shuttle Buses
The VW Mitigation Trust has $130 million in funds to replace older, high-polluting transit and shuttle buses with new battery-electric or fuel-cell buses. Anyone in the state of California (that operates primarily within the state) can apply. This includes public entities, private entities, and Indian Tribes. There are no limits on the number of transit and shuttle applications that can be submitted. Applications are processed on a first come, first served basis, while funds are available.

Find more information including guidelines to apply, informational materials, and FAQs at https://bit.ly/VWmaterials.

Athens has done a very poor job street sweeping in North Redondo Beach. They roll through at high speed. They do not spray or brush the streets (the brushes are not even in contact with the asphalt). They do not clean all the way to the curb; they don't even attempt to clean to the gutters even when there are no cars parked there.

Street sweeping is about more than litter. It is the primary way we remove road particulates so that we don't have to breathe it in every time a car passes by and resuspends particulates into the air. NRB has the highest PM2.5 values in the Beach Cities, particularly D5 North of Artesia (per CalEnviroScreen). Sanitation includes the air and Athens has shown themselves as not capable at the job. We should not renew our contract with them until they actually do their job.

I am writing in support as a resident of District 3 to prioritize funding for the proposed enclosed shooting range on Beryl St. as noted in an email sent today to Mayor and Councilmembers.
