EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
On October 25, 2023, the Public Art Commission considered designs submitted by three artists for a mural at the Pad 10 Skate Park at 500 Fisherman’s Wharf and unanimously recommended the design submitted by Andrew Jenkins. On November 21, 2023, the City Council considered the Public Art Commission’s recommendation and directed staff to prepare an agreement with Mr. Jenkins for the mural’s installation.
Included in the FY 2024-25 Budget is an appropriation of $75,000 from the John Parsons Public Art Fund for the proposed Skate Park Mural. The artist’s budget totals $47,985.50 leaving $27,014.50 for project-related expenses not provided by the artist, including new signage for the restrooms and a dedication plaque.
BACKGROUND
The Pad 10 Skate Park opened to the public in June of 2023. Part of the overall vision for the skatepark was the installation of a mural capturing the spirit of the sport and reflecting the culture of Redondo Beach. To that end, staff began the Public Art Commission’s process for recommending an artist for the project to City Council. On October 25, 2023, the Public Art Commission reviewed the designs submitted by the artists and unanimously recommended the design submitted by Mr.
Jenkins.
As mentioned, the City Council considered the Public Art Commission’s recommendation at their November 21, 2023 meeting, approved the proposed artwork, and directed staff to prepare an agreement with Mr. Jenkins for mural installation. Attached to this report are the proposed contract with Mr. Jenkins and renderings of the Council and Commission-approved mural design. If the agreement is approved, installation of the mural will begin in the next few weeks and the project will be complete before the end of the calendar year.
