EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The Police Department has been awarded a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) in the amount of $160,000 to participate in the Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP). Traffic enforcement activities will include saturation patrol directed at alcohol and drug impaired drivers, primary collision factor enforcement, distracted driver operations, motorcycle enforcement operations, bicycle and pedestrian operations, seatbelt enforcement operations, driver’s license and sobriety checkpoints, and officer training on traffic safety laws. The grant term runs from October 1, 2024 through September 30, 2025. No matching funds are required from the City. The grant funds will be distributed on a reimbursement basis to backfill sworn personnel overtime expenditures for the directed enforcement.

BACKGROUND
The mission of California OTS is to effectively administer traffic safety grants that deliver innovative programs and eliminate traffic fatalities and injuries on California roadways. The specific goal of the STEP campaign is to reduce the number of persons injured or killed in crashes involving alcohol or drug impairment, distracted driving, excess speed, red light violations, seat belt violations, motorcycle, bicycle, and pedestrian traffic, and other primary collision factors. The grant funds will
