CITY OF REDONDO BEACH
Budget Response Report #17
Date: February 18, 2025
Question:

What is the estimated cost to add shade structures at Dale Page Park? Response:

Several types of structures could be used to provide shade for the play areas and sitting areas at Dale Page Park if existing conditions allow it. The most popular types of shades available and estimated costs are as follows:

Canopy Style Shade Structures
The cost for canopy style structures ranges from $12,000 to $70,000, depending on the size and height of the structure. The most popular size, which is 20’ x 20’ with an eightfoot entry height, costs roughly $15,000. Installation costs, which includes concrete footings, support columns and associated hardware, vary significantly depending on the size of the play structure and the type of surface on which it sits. Costs range from $20,000 to $65,000, with the cost to install a 20’ x 20’ structure being about $25,000.

Sail Shade Structures
Sail style structures are more expensive than canopy structures, with costs ranging from $15,000 to $90,000. The cost for a structure with 20-foot sides is about $25,000.

Installation costs are similar to that of Canopy style structures.

Cantilevered Umbrella Structures
BRR #17

A third type of commonly-used shade structure is cantilevered umbrellas. Five of these structures (three 15’x30’ and two 15’x15’) were installed at Franklin Park in 2024, for a cost of $149,650, including installation.

Unlike other parks that recently have received shade structures, the feasibility at Dale Page Park is less certain due to the potential for conflicts with utilities along the corridor.

Should the Council wish to pursue a project at Dale Page Park, staff would need to contact the utility companies to determine if and how the project might be constrained.

Funding in the amount of $30,000 is available in the Playground Shade Structures Capital Improvement Project.

local stadiums for fly market/special event travelers; attend Trade Shows to cultivate business from international markets (IMEX and IPW) and focus on film development with permitted shoots. The strategies outlined above are those being funded by the top tier markets, which help generate TOT.

I am urging Council to consider increasing RBT’s Assessment within the scope of the TOT increase. If Council increased TOT by 1% and allowed RBT to increase the assessment by 1%, we would be contributing $1M to the general fund and helping secure future business into our hotels. Both Los Angeles and Santa Monica reallocate a portion of TOT to fund their respective TBID/TMD’s, which is also an option for Redondo Beach.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I will attend the Council meeting tonight and welcome the opportunity to answer any questions you may have.

Kindly,
