Hello,
I'm speaking in strong support of the proposed moratorium on new smoke shops in Redondo Beach being considered tonight.
Recent inspections by RBPD and state authorities have uncovered illegal tobacco and marijuana products at multiple smoke shops on Artesia Boulevard. These establishments are not only violating state law but directly undermining our community's health priorities.
Our schools have made reducing vaping a key goal, yet the proliferation of smoke shops-currently at least 15 within our city-sends a contradictory message to our youth. The proposed buffer zone of 600 feet from schools is essential, as is limiting the number of shops per district.
Redondo Beach has made tremendous progress in tobacco control, moving from an "F" grade to a "B" in the American Lung Association's State of Tobacco Control report. This moratorium would continue that positive trajectory while supporting the comprehensive smoking ban in public places our city has already enacted.
The economic value of our community is directly linked to its health and safety. By limiting smoke shops, we protect property values while creating a healthier environment that attracts families and businesses committed to community wellbeing.
I urge you to approve this moratorium tonight and to consider the additional regulations presented by Director Weiner, including the conditional use permit requirements and unannounced inspections.
Thank you for your leadership on this important public health issue.
