Good evening,
Holly Osborne, District 5
There is a bill, AB 2251 that was passed in 2022. This bill requires urban areas to plan to increase their tree canopy. The goal is an increase by 10% by the year 2035. (I read your attachments; not sure if you make it or not. I apologize; my attention has been on another "track", also concerned with "greening.")
A screen shot of the bill is at the bottom.
.
A tree canopy is very important in this era of climate change. For example, just a couple blocks from me (at my latitude in North Redondo) a temperature of 74 degrees F was recorded in the shade, and 87 degrees F not in the shade. That 13 degree difference is the difference between a small kid being able to play outside vs not being able to play outside. It is the difference between an elderly person being able to walk outside vs not walk outside.
The canopy bill below seems in conflict with some of the recent state laws narrowing set backs, since setbacks are where trees can be planted.
I would like to suggest some addtional steps for our city and citizens to take, in addtion to what you have already proposed. . Next year is an election year. All candidates for Sen. Allen's office and Assemblymember Muratsuchi's office should be asked (drilled) on what they plan to do to resolve this conflict. . The city should be allowed to restore their setbacks to what they were before. We should be allowed to set lot coverage limits (we did not have them before), because green grass is also essential for cooling. Ask the candidates if they are going to work for those goals. And get neighboring cities to join us.
Thank you
Holly Osborne
