Dear Mayor Light and Members of the City Council:

I am writing regarding the item on termination of the Gate Wave Art Project and reallocation of the $275,000 in project funds. I support terminating the Gate Wave sculpture. Concentrating such a large sum on a single specialized artwork represents a disproportionate share of the City’s limited public art resources. Public art funding in Redondo Beach, primarily drawn from the John Parsons Public Art Fund, is intended to enhance publicly owned spaces for the broadest community benefit. A single high-cost installation does not maximize that benefit. I urge the Council to reallocate the $275,000 thoughtfully within the allowable purposes of the Public Art Fund. Priority should be given to options that deliver wider visibility and shared value, such as:
• Supporting the King Harbor Gateway Sign replacement (a highly visible civic landmark at a major waterfront entrance), if it qualifies as an eligible public art expenditure; • Funding multiple smaller public art installations distributed among different neighborhoods; or • Directing a meaningful portion toward the ongoing maintenance, repair, and conservation of the City’s existing public art collection.

Spreading these resources more evenly, or preserving what the City already owns, produces greater overall community value, avoids over-concentration on one item, and better serves residents and visitors throughout Redondo Beach.

Thank you for considering a practical approach that prioritizes efficient use of restricted public art funds and broader community benefit.

Sincerely,
Bryan Stone
