Dear Governor Newsom:
The Inland Empire Coalition of Mayors, comprising mayors from cities in San Bernardino and Riverside counties, wishes to express our strong support for the Community Assistance, Recovery and Empowerment Court concept.
Many of us have made mental and behavioral health reform a priority of our administrations.
We need new models for treatment, facilities, and programming. We do not need to commit the sins of the past, but we are decades past old models. CARE Court offers us hope as we see it as a bold step toward meaningful reform.
Like you mentioned, there is no compassion in stepping over people on our streets and sidewalks. We spend an enormous amount of our resources trying to help those who cannot or do not have the capacity to help themselves. With CARE Court, we will now have a new set of tools at our disposal to connect a person struggling with untreated mental illness with the care they need.
Thank you for bringing creative and meaningful solutions to this monumental crisis.
