A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF RIALTO, STATE OF CALIFORNIA, REQUESTING THAT BOTH THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA AND FEDERAL GOVERNMENT IMPLEMENT A TEMPORARY 12-MONTH SUSPENSION OF THE GAS TAX WHEREAS, the American Automobile Association (AAA) calculates that the current average cost of regular gasoline in San Bernardino County is $6.32 per gallon with 51 cents of this being contributed to the state gas tax; and WHEREAS, the average cost of regular gasoline at this time one year ago was $4.23 per gallon; and WHEREAS, the County of San Bernardino has seen an increase in the cost of regular gasoline of $2.09 per gallon since last year; and WHEREAS, the highest ever recorded average cost of regular gasoline in the State of California was reached on June 14, 2022, at $6.44 per gallon; and WHEREAS, AAA calculates the current national average cost of regular gasoline at $4.98 per gallon; therefore, San Bernardino county residents are paying approximately $1.34 per gallon over the national average gas price which is causing a serious negative financial impact on families in the City of Rialto; and WHEREAS, the Governor of California is positioned to provide an opportunity for temporary relief at the gas pump using the estimated $97.5 billion budget surplus about half of which Governor Gavin Newsom says is available to spend for any purpose, as highlighted in the May 25, 2022, Bloomberg article written by Romy Varghese; and WHEREAS, City of Rialto residents and workers who commute to and from Rialto have expressed their struggles in finding ways to cover these unprecedented rising fuel costs; and WHEREAS, along with the rising cost of gasoline, the unprecedented rise in inflation is negatively impacting the residents of our City, and gas tax relief would help ensure money remains available to families to cover basic necessities such as food, housing and health care.
NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF RIALTO DOES HEREBY FIND, DETERMINE, AND RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS:
Section 1: The City Council of the City of Rialto hereby requests that Governor Newsom and the Federal Government implement a temporary 12-month suspension of the State and Federal Gas Tax.
Section 2: The City Clerk is hereby directed to transmit a certified copy of this Resolution to the Office of Governor Newsom, and the Offices of the Federal Legislators representing the City of Rialto.
