Environmental Benefits of an Archaea RNG Project
4 With an Archaea Energy facility, landfill emissions are turned into renewable energy instead of entering the atmosphere Landfill with no Gas Collection Landfill with Gas Collection, but no LFGTE or RNG Facility
Landfill with Gas Collection and
Archaea RNG Project
Methane (CH4) and CO2 are vented directly
to the atmosphere. CH4 and CO2 are captured and flared. CH4 is converted to CO2, which is less destructive to
the atmosphere. This approach captures up to
80% of the CH4, but it is not used beneficially.
CH4 and CO2 are captured and processed.
CH4 is upgraded into pipeline-quality RNG that
displaces fossil fuels. This approach captures
and beneficially uses over 90% of the CH4.
CO2 is burned, limiting the impact on this gas
on the atmosphere, and in line with state
regulations. Archaea is working on technology
to capture and sequester this CO2, further
reducing emissions.
Archaea Environmental and Social Impact
5 LFG-to-RNG production facilities
capture naturally occurring waste
emissions and repurpose them into
valuable, low carbon fuel that
displaces the use of non-renewable
resources to produce the same
amount of energy.
Capturing landfill emissions
prevents both malodorous and
hazardous air pollutants from
being emitted into nearby
communities, resulting in
improved overall wellbeing for
residents.
When LFG is converted into
RNG, various non-methane
organic compounds are
removed during gas treatment
and upgrading processes, which
reduces possible health risks
from these compounds.
RNG facilities support
neighboring industries
(construction, engineering,
equipment vendors, utilities)
while typically employing local
talent to run day-to-day
operations.

Mid-Valley Sanitary Landfill RNG Project and CNG Station Project Overview – Operations, Benefits, and Impacts
71. Estimated using EPA’s LFGE Benefits Calculator.
This project is expected to deliver significant community benefits with little to no off-site impacts • Archaea Energy is currently developing a renewable natural gas (RNG) plant on-site at the Mid-Valley Sanitary Landfill, which is owned by San Bernadino County and operated by Athens Services. At the Archaea RNG plant, the gases that are collected from the decomposing waste in place at the landfill will be processed to remove any impurities and transformed into RNG, instead of being vented or flared into the atmosphere. • A portion of the RNG will then be transported through local natural gas infrastructure to our customers, including the University of California and other utilities and corporations looking to decarbonize their operations. The remaining RNG will be compressed on-site at the planned CNG station and loaded onto trucks for transportation to nearby wholesale customers. • Using EPA estimates, when operating at full capacity, the RNG facility is expected to have the same annual environmental benefits as the carbon sequestered by more than 650,000 acres of U.S. forests and provide enough renewable natural gas in one year to heat more than 16,000 homes1. • We’ll be hiring a handful of folks to operate the RNG facility and associated CNG station. These will be high-paying, blue-collar jobs with full benefits and a 401k and that don’t require a college degree. We aim to hire from the local community whenever we can. • Safety is at the core of everything we do. We have extensive plans in place to comply with all local, state, and federal laws to ensure the safety of the environment and the community during both the construction and operation of the plant. • We expect fewer than 5 truck entries and exits from the CNG station, which would be located adjacent to an existing truck stop and freeway, per day.
So, aside from a small increase in activity during the construction of the station, the community should notice very few, if any, off-site impacts from our operations.
RNG Project and CNG Station Project Location
8 CNG Station Proposed Plan View Layout and Technical Specifications 9 • For this project, Archaea has partnered with
Fastech, a leading builder of CNG stations,
who has built hundreds of stations to date.
• The CNG station will consist of:
Basic inlet filtration
Two compressor system
- A single compressor is sufficient
for these flow rates, but a
second compressor is included
for redundancy.
VFD rated motors and drives to control
the compressor flow rate
Matrix panel to support up to four
trailer loading positions
Traceable/certified transaction data
for trailer filling events
A single site buffer storage tank (with
backpressure regulator flow, process
stability, etc.)
A compressed air system for
Instrument Air connections
• The CNG station has been designed to
comply with all relevant conditions of the
nearby existing truck stop (landscaping,
color, noise, etc.).
