January 11, 2022
January 6, 2022, marks the first anniversary of the January 6, 2021, attempt by a violent mob to prevent the peaceful transfer of power to allow the will of the people to install then President-elect Joe Biden as the 46th President of the United States.

Voting is a sacred right of any democracy. It is also a Human Right. Multiple lawsuits have found no evidence of voter fraud in the 2020 Presidential election.

Official investigative work following the January 6, 2021 , events found evidence that reveals knowledge of this attack on the Capitol by then-President Trump, who did nothing to stop it for a full three hours. It also found that “[e]ven after the crowd ultimately dispersed late in the day, then -President Trump, through his legal team, continued to seek to delay or otherwise impede the electoral count.” Additional evidence was found that identified the former president’s involvement in a scheme to replace Biden’s certified electors with uncertified electors pledged to him.

Richmond is a Human Rights City with a Human Rights Human Relations (HRHR) Commission. HRHR Commissioner and former Richmond City Councilmember Jeff Ritterman wrote a resolution for the City Council to adopt. It is important that we mark this first year anniversary of such a horrific day as January 6, 2021, by adopting this resolution which showc ases our defense of the Human Right and Sacred Right of voting and reaffirms our commitment to fight against any attempt to subvert and take this right away.
