DISCUSSION:

In 1968, U.S. Representative Edward Roybal and President Lyndon Johnson recognized Hispanic Week to honor the contributions, achievements, and involvement of Hispanic Americans in the development of the United States, and in 1988, the commemoration was expanded to a month through legislation sponsored by U.S.

Representative Esteban Edward Torres, amended by U.S. Senator, and signed into law by President Ronald Reagan.

Hispanic Americans have made positive contributions to our community in many ways:
as economic drivers as business owners, workers, and entrepreneurs; as contributors to education as teachers and professors; as protectors of our health and well-being as nurses, doctors, police officers, firefighters, caretakers, and childcare workers; as advocates for social equality and justice through civic leadership; as elected and public officials in our government; and through cultural enrichment as artists, singers, musicians, performers and writers.

The City of Richmond takes pride in the growing diversity of our community and encourages all residents and community members to learn more about the rich culture, traditions, and history of Hispanic Americans and celebrate the valuable contributions Hispanic Americans have made to the growth, prosperity, and well-being of our region.
