STATEMENT OF THE
ISSUE:
On March 21, 2023, the City of Richmond recognizes
March 10 as Tibetan Uprising Day and stands in
solidarity with the Tibetan community.
RECOMMENDED ACTION:
PROCLAMATION recognizing March 10, 2023, as
Tibetan Uprising Day in the City of Richmond - Mayor
Eduardo Martinez (510-620-6503) and Councilmember
Claudia Jimenez (510-620-6565).
DISCUSSION:
The proclamation declares March 10, 2023, as Tibetan Uprising Day in the City of Richmond. It recognizes the Tibetan National Uprising against China's occupation of AGENDA
REPORT
March 21, 2023
Tibet and honors the Tibetans who lost their lives in the struggle for freedom. The proclamation also acknowledges the ongoing suppression of human rights and freedom in Tibet and the marginalization of Tibetan language, culture, and identity. It highlights the United States Congress' laws and reports regarding Tibet and the bipartisan and bicameral Bill to peacefully resolve China's occupation of Tibet. The proclamation emphasizes the principal commitments of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the Nobel Peace Prize recipient, and the US Congressional Gold Medal recipient, and the vibrant Tibetan American community in Richmond. Finally, it recognizes the community gathering to raise the Tibetan flag and commemorate the 64th anniversary of the Tibetan National Uprising against China's occupation.
