DISCUSSION:

The Richmond Police Department encourages its officers to maintain a high level of physical fitness in order to meet the many unexpected demands of the job and to best serve the community we protect. Police work can be physically demanding, and Officer fitness is critical to the effectiveness of any law enforcement agency. Monthly deep cleaning of the departmental gym is required to keep the gym in a workable, sanitary environment, to encourage the use of its facilities as a way to ensure physical fitness and boost mental health.

Gym use has been encouraged by executive leaders and peer groups based on several studies showing that a positive boost in mental health (not to mention physical strength) can be achieved by engaging in physical activity every day for at least thirty minutes.

Advance Crime Scene Restoration currently services the cleaning of police vehicles, police crime scenes, and police jail cells. In September 2022, following a competitive process, Advance Crime Scene Restoration was awarded a contract for biohazardous material cleaning throughout the City of Richmond on an as-needed basis.

A contract amendment will add deep cleaning services to include commercial/hospital- grade disinfection (to kill 99.9% of bacteria and viruses) on the departmental gym equipment, floors, walls, and doors, which will reduce exposure to risks in a shared confined space. The deep clean combined with the pro-active wiping down of equipment after each use will help maintain a stronger, healthier, police force.
