STATEMENT OF THE
ISSUE:
Vaisakhi is a significant religious and cultural festival for the Sikh community. It marks the birth of the Khalsa and the harvest season.
RECOMMENDED ACTION:
PROCLAMATION honoring the Sikh American
Community’s Celebration of Vaisakhi - Mayor Eduardo
Martinez (510-620-6503) and Councilmember Soheila
Bana (510-620-6473).

The City of Richmond recognizes the importance of celebrating and promoting cultural diversity and understanding. April 14, 2023, marked the beginning of the harvest season and the birth of the Khalsa.
The word "Khalsa" means "pure", Khalsa's are Sikhs which have undergone the sacred Amrit Ceremony initiated by the 10th Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh.
The Sikh American community in Richmond has organized a variety of cultural events and activities to celebrate Vaisakhi, including parades, food fairs and musical performances which provide opportunities for all residents to participate in and learn about this important holiday.
The Sikh American community is an integral part of Richmond, and their traditions and celebrations contribute to the richness and diversity of Richmond’s culture.
Residents of Richmond are encouraged to join the Sikh community in the celebration of Vaisakhi.
