Sports Officiating Services for Danny Walker
FINANCIAL IMPACT: Funding for this contract is included within the Community Services-Recreation’s existing budget. An
overall $70,000 fiscal impact to the General Fund is
allocated in the below listed account numbers:

STATEMENT OF THE
ISSUE:
The Community Services-Recreation provides various
Sports programs for youth and adults. Recreation has
contracted with Danny Walker previously to officiate
sports programs. The Community Services-Recreation is
requesting approval of a contract with Danny Walker to
continue providing these services.
RECOMMENDED ACTION:
APPROVE a contract with Danny Walker in an amount
not to exceed $70,000, beginning July 1, 2023, and
ending on June 30, 2025, to provide sports officiating
services – Community Services Department (Ranjana
Maharaj 510-620-6972/Tetteh Kisseh 510-620-6919).

DISCUSSION:
Community Services - Recreation currently has a robust sports program schedule for Futsal Leagues, Candy Cane Classic Tournament, Volleyball, 8v8 Soccer Leagues, and Youth Basketball Leagues. To continue providing these programs, Recreation solicited bids for a provider through the BidsOnline system. Danny Walker was the only respondent to this bid request.
Danny Walker is a certified referee and has several years of experience teaching referees current trends in different sports. Danny Walker has provided referee services to Recreation’s youth basketball and Futsal programs in the past.
The diverse sports programs that Recreation provides are popular in the community.
School teams, clubs and independent teams look forward to participating in these programs. With the City’s focus on active living, health, fitness, and wellness, sports programs are instrumental in providing an avenue in reaching these goals. Contracting for this service will allow Recreation to expand the sports programs during evenings and weekends.
Recreation staff is seeking City Council approval for the contract with Danny Walker to provide referee services for Recreation’s sports programs.
