Whereas Richmond, California, resides on the ancestral lands of the Ohlone people, among other Native American tribes, whose presence and stewardship have persisted since time immemorial; and

Whereas Native American Heritage Month is an opportunity to honor the rich history, culture, and traditions of Native Americans and to recognize the many contributions they have made to our community and our nation; and

Whereas the City of Richmond recognizes that the histories of Indigenous peoples are intricately woven into the fabric of the city and the nation, and it is imperative to acknowledge and teach about the original inhabitants of this land; and

Whereas it is also a time to acknowledge the systemic policies of assimilation and removal that have attempted to erase Native American cultures and languages, and to reflect upon the need for reconciliation and to address the enduring impact of such policies; and
Whereas the City of Richmond celebrates the ongoing contributions of the Native American community in enriching our city's cultural diversity and reaffirms its commitment to uplifting the Indigenous residents of Richmond;
Now, I, Mayor Eduardo Martinez, on behalf of the Richmond city council, do hereby proclaim November 2023 as Native American Heritage Month in the City of Richmond.
