Crime Report
Mayor Martinez, Council and Community,
The attached document provides the statistical data related to crime for the period of September 26 - October 24, 2023. In addition to the crime stats I have a few additional highlights for the month of October.
There was an increase in shootings in the month of October which resulted in two homicides. Our detectives have active leads they are following up on to identify the suspect in this case.
Our total number of homicides for the year is 6.
As many of you are aware, in addition to the homicides that occurred on 23rd street, there are other issues that we’ve been working on to include human trafficking. We are continuing conducting human trafficking operations as time and staffing permit. Recently, we had a case in which we identified the victim of human trafficking. We contacted one of our detectives that works out of the FJC and she was able to work the case. The detective wrote several search warrants that resulted in A substantial amount of evidence against the suspected pimp. The case was presented to the District Attorney’s office and he Was charged with multiple counts of pimping/pandering/robbery and other related crimes.
These cases take a significant amount of time and effort to work and I want to acknowledge Officer Garcia and Detective Farr for their thorough work on this case.
In addition to human trafficking on 23rd Street, we’ve started parking enforcement along the corridor, conducted traffic operations, and we’ve partnered with code enforcement to address some street vendor issues.
We had two illegal dumping cases that were referred to the District Attorney’s office for filing. In addition to that, there was a great example of cross department collaboration that occurred when there was a dumpster day in the Iron Triangle and a hauler attempted to dump several truckloads of garbage at the dumpster event. The hauler was directed to dispose of his trash at a legal dump site. Several parking citations were also issued for various violations in relation to this hauler.
Again, this was a good collaborative effort across city departments.
Lastly, our department is well aware of the Israeli and Palestinian conflict. our department has taken a proactive approach to support all members of our community by providing extra patrols to religious sanctuaries that can be potentially affected and we will continue to remain alert so that all members of our community feel a sense of safety and security.
