RESOLUTION NO.

RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF RICHMOND,

CALIFORNIA IN TO PAY ANNUAL SHUUMI LAND TAXES

WHEREAS, the City of Richmond recognizes the importance of acknowledging the history and culture of the indigenous Ohlone people, the original stewards of the land on which our city is built; and

WHEREAS, the Shuumi Land Tax is a voluntary financial contribution that individuals and organizations can make to support the work of the Sogorea Te' Land Trust, an urban Indigenous women-led land trust that facilitates the return of Chochenyo and Karkin Ohlone lands in the San Francisco Bay Area to Indigenous stewardship; and

WHEREAS, the payment of the Shuumi Land Tax represents a step towards rectifying the historical injustices faced by the Ohlone people by funding the acquisition and preservation of sacred land, cultural revitalization, and community-building; and

WHEREAS, such contributions are essential for supporting the sustainability of the Indigenous-led land trust, which, in turn, benefits the cultural heritage, environmental stewardship, and community education within the City of Richmond; and

WHEREAS, by participating in this act of restoration and reparations, the City of Richmond can demonstrate leadership in supporting indigenous sovereignty and resilience;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of Richmond, California, respectfully requests the City Manager to allocate funds for the annual payment of the Shuumi Land Tax, as a symbolic acknowledgment of the Ohlone people and in support of their ongoing cultural and community endeavors.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Council directs the City Manager to include this annual contribution in the city's budget for the upcoming fiscal year and to continue this commitment as a line item in all future budgets.
