Whereas the City of Richmond recognizes the importance of blood donation as a life- saving act that benefits all people, including those undergoing surgeries, cancer treatment, chronic illnesses, and traumatic injuries; and
Whereas National Blood Donor Month is observed annually in January, as a time to celebrate the critical contribution of blood and platelet donors; and
Whereas this month-long celebration highlights the vital role blood donors play in the health and wellbeing of their communities, particularly during the winter months when blood donations typically decline; and
Whereas the City of Richmond acknowledges the need for a diverse pool of donors to ensure the availability of all blood types for patients with various medical needs; and
Whereas historically, members of the LGBTQ+ community have been wrongfully excluded from blood donation, a policy that federal guidelines have only recently updated to improve; and
Whereas the City of Richmond encourages all eligible residents, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, to consider blood donation, and appreciates the steps taken towards inclusivity in donor eligibility;
I, Eduardo Martinez, Mayor of the City of Richmond, on behalf of the City Council and the residents of Richmond, do hereby proclaim January 2024 as National Blood Donor Month in Richmond, California, and urge all residents to consider helping their neighbors with regular blood donations.
