Richmond Police Department
Crime Report

Mayor Martinez, Council and Community,

The attached documents provide the statistical data related to crime for the month of December. In addition to the crime statistics, you will also find statistical information related to our use of the FLOCK camera system. This information includes the number of cases in which the License Plate Reader (LPR) cameras have assisted our department with since the implementation of the program in April.

In the attached document you will see several crime increases in the month of December.

Robberies increased by 39%, sexual offenses increased by 67% and vehicle thefts increased by 32%. Burglaries and thefts both decreased in the month of December by 23% and 15% respectively.

During the month of December, our department stayed busy with the several community events. Police department staff collaborated with the Fire Department on our annual Police and Fire toy and food giveaway. Over 500 families were provided food and toys to enhance their holiday celebrations. Additionally, we held our annual “Shop with a cop” event in which we took 55 kids from RPAL shopping at Target and Walmart. Each kid received $100 to shop with and many officers contributed their own funds to purchase additional gifts for the kids.

In addition to the December report, I want to provide an overview of 2023.

There were eight (8) homicides in the City last year. This is the lowest number of homicides in our City in over 50 years. In addition to the homicides, there were 2 vehicular manslaughter cases and one officer involved shooting. While we continue to aim for 0 homicides, eight is a significant decrease from years prior and we should celebrate our collaborative efforts that have led to the decrease in homicides.

Aside from the homicides, overall crime was up slightly compared to 2022. Violent crime was up by 8% and property crime was down by 1%. Total index crimes increased 2%.
