AGENDA
REPORT
February 20, 2024
DISCUSSION:
The traffic signal at the 6th Street and Macdonald Avenue intersection is currently in flash mode. Vehicle Code section 21800(d) requires motorists approaching this intersection to safely navigate the intersection. Drivers are required to stop at this intersection and proceed with caution only when it is safe to do so. Therefore, motorists can continue to use this intersection while permanent repairs are pending. The proposed improvement will repair and improve the traffic signal to current standards to ensure efficient traffic flow that will optimize traffic signal operations.
The engineering services for the project will be provided by CSW|ST2, via their existing On-Call contract, with the amount not to exceed $25,000. It should be noted that CSW|ST2 has already initiated preliminary design work for this project, but additional funding is needed to complete the design and to provide services during construction.
For the construction phase, staff intends to use the services of NEMA Construction as the builder, who provided a bid of $179,820. The project will benefit from an expedited process by utilizing the City’s as-needed electrical contract. Also, included in the funding request is $36,180 for contingency funding that would be applied towards change orders or other unforeseen work.
The total estimated cost for the entire project is $241,000, which will be funded through Measure J Funds. The project schedule includes the design phase, slated to begin in March 2024 and conclude in April 2024. Subsequently, the construction phase is expected to commence in April 2024 and conclude by September 2024.
Public Works staff recommends that the City Council approve the appropriation of Measure J funds (Fund 2002) in the amount of $241,000 for the design, construction, and construction management of the traffic signal improvement project at the intersection of 6th Street and Macdonald Avenue.
