Subject:

Resolution to Support SEIU CIR Members for a Fair
Contract with LifeLong Medical
FINANCIAL IMPACT: No Fiscal Impact.

PREVIOUS COUNCIL
ACTION:

No previous action on this issue.

STATEMENT OF THE
ISSUE:

Improve the recruitment and retention of highly skilled resident physicians to Richmond community-based
program at LifeLong Medical.

RECOMMENDED ACTION:

ADOPT a resolution that urges LifeLong Medical to offer a competitive salary, safe overnight accommodations,
and transparent disciplinary procedures to better recruit and retain resident physicians within the City of
Richmond – Vice Mayor Claudia Jimenez (510-620-6565)
and Councilmember Melvin Willis (510-412-2050).

DISCUSSION:

In order to retrain and recruit highly skilled physicians to Richmond, we must ensure our residency programs are staying competitive with others in the Bay Area. The community-based program at Lifelong Medical Center is one of the lowest paid AGENDA

residency programs in the region, impacting its desirability for medical students seeking to train in the East Bay.

The resident physicians, represented by SEIU/CIR, are in bargaining with management, and they have been offered a last-best-final proposal that keeps up with neither the cost of living in the area, nor the pay at neighboring programs. The residents are also fighting for transparent disciplinary procedures to ensure they have the adequate support to graduate on time; and safe overnight accommodations to put an end to the unfortunate trend of car accidents associated with the night shift.

LifeLong Medical Center is a community-based program, where resident physicians self-select because they want to serve all members of the community. They are committed to Richmond, and we must show them the same support so we may continue to bring quality healthcare providers to our city.
