Recognizing August 9, 2025 as
International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples
WHEREAS, The International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples shall be observed on August 9 of every year during the International Decade of the World’s Indigenous People. The date marks the day of the first meeting in 1982 , of the UN Working group on Indigenous populations of the sub-commission on the promotion and protection of human rights; and WHEREAS, this is a time to honor the history, contributions, and cultural heritage of the Indigenous Peoples community. The International days of the World’s Indigenous Peoples was established on December 23, 1994, by the United Nations General Assembly, through resoluti on 489/214, and this day established by the United Nations, recognizes and celebrates the contributions and rights of Indigenous Peoples worldwide, while also acknowledging their historical and ongoing struggles. The purpose of this day is to raise awareness about the needs and rights of Indigenous Peoples; and
WHEREAS, symbolically, the colors of red and orange draws attention to the profound impacts of history and the lasting effects it has had on indigenous communities . Red and orange shirts represent the loss of indigenous identities within residential school systems; and WHEREAS, while it is not a federal holiday under United States Law, the Biden Administration formally issued a proclamation recognizing Indigenous Peoples Day on the holiday in 2021, written with input from the Indigenous activists; and
WHEREAS, in Richmond, California, the Richmond Art Center hosts a Fall Family Day event to celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day, which often overlaps with Th e International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples. The event included activities such as viewing indigenous artist and musicians, enjoying cultural food, and learning about indigenous cultures and history . This day serves as a reminder of the important contributions of Indigenous Peoples to society and the need to protect their rights and culture.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that I, Mayor Eduardo Martinez, and the Richmond City Council do hereby formally recognize August 9, 2025 as The International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples for the exceptional contributions to history and to the Indigenous Peoples community.
