STATEMENT OF THE
ISSUE:
The City of Richmond recognizes March 09, 2026, as
Tibetan Uprising Day and stands in solidarity with the
Tibetan community.
RECOMMENDED ACTION: PROCLAMATION declaring March 09, 2026, as Tibetan Uprising Day in the City of Richmond – Mayor’s Office
(Mayor Eduardo Martinez 510-620-6503).
DISCUSSION:
The proclamation designates March 09, 2026, as Tibetan Uprising Day in the City of Richmond. It commemorates the Tibetan National Uprising against China's occupation of Tibet and honors those who sacrificed their lives in the struggle for freedom.
Additionally, the proclamation acknowledges the ongoing suppression of human rights in Tibet and the marginalization of Tibetan language, culture, and identity. It highlights U.S. congressional actions related to Tibet, including bipartisan and bicameral efforts to peacefully resolve China's occupation. The proclamation also recognizes the invaluable contributions of Richmond’s vibrant Tibetan-American community. Finally, it honors the community’s gathering to raise the Tibetan flag and mark the 66th anniversary of the Tibetan National Uprising.
